About the Book

INTRODUCTION Writing about history of Puerto Rico or any subject for that matter, seems like an overwhelming task. History's subject matter is immense, encompassing all of human affairs in the recorded past, because no one person can possibly consult all of the records regarding our history; no work of history can ever pretend to be comprehensive or universal. At the same time, history's subject matter is partially irretrievable. Barring the invention of time travel, no writer or scholar can experience the past firsthand or recreate its conditions in a laboratory setting or in front of a computer. Historians must rely on the fragmentary records that survive from the time period under study, which necessarily reveal just part of the story. For these reasons, the guiding principles behind all historical writing must be selection and interpretation: the thoughtful selection of topics and questions that seem most interesting, and the responsible interpretation of sources in order to construct meaningful arguments. Subjective decisions about what to include, what to exclude, and how to understand it make history writing manageable in the first place. No less importantly, they also make it controversial, because writers and scholars are bound to disagree with the judgments of other scholars and writers. So I think of history writing, then, as an ongoing argument or debate over this unavoidable process of selection and interpretation from first account or second hand sources. Now that we are clear regarding my opinion on writing about history in this book I will bring out some historical events that have been lightly touched by those who have dedicated and spend years and years swimming or surfing into the annals of our local history and complemented with obtained second-hand sources. Yes, in this century when our island has been shocked by the general acknowledgment that Puerto Rico does belong to the territories of the United States this events that I am to bring out one more time shows according to my opinion a very careful planning and powerful governmental strategies that has seen the light of its results in this XXI century. Our island Puerto Rico had for centuries on been in the eyes of many countries enemies of Spain. In the government chambers of France, England and the United States the word Puerto Rico meant high economical earnings and the possession of an island that will have given powerful control of the Caribbean Sea passage. The Spanish Government negative history regarding the care of the Island is well documented, and during the 18th century the local rich and powerful business man residing on Puerto Rico who had lived in other countries where they have enjoy their culture, the arts, and seen the progress, were tired of promises made by dignitaries from Spain to make better the economic situation during that period. There was a general attitude towards the laziness of what they called progress. So they secretly in all cardinal points of the island gathered to plan how can they moved forward and take over the island and declare it an independent republic. The Master Laster Histories of Past Realizations Series is intended to provide students and interested laypeople with up-to-date, concise, and analytical histories of past historical and cultural events alone with Spanish and English translations of ancient published books from many of the nations of the past and contemporary world to enhance ours. Not since who knows exactly when has there been an attempt by an unknown not recognize scholar to attempt publish a series of not so famous stories and histories of not so well known worldwide stature characters just to feed the urge for other knowledge apart from the one found daily on our own schools or home libraries backyards. We believe that this series will prove to be a valuable contribution to our understanding of other countries in our increasingly interdependent world.
