Pythagoras beziehungsweise die Pythagoreer werden als die Entdecker der Harmonie angesehen. Deren Definition wird an der Musik festgemacht: Oktave, Quinte und Quarte sind Bestandteile der Harmonie und nach der Auffassung vieler Forscher in ihren mathematischen Verhältnissen 2:1, 3:2 und 4:3 von Pythagoras und seinen Schülern definiert worden. Texte der Pythagoreer Philolaos, Archytas und vom Pythagoreer-Sympathisanten Platon werden als Zeugnis für diese Auffassung herangezogen. Insbesondere dient Platons Schrift Timaios als Beweis für die Bedeutung Pythagoras' bei den mathematischen Definitionen in der Musik. Die genaue Beschäftigung mit Originaltexten altgriechischer und frührömischer Philosophen, Natur- und Musikwissenschaftler führt zu kritischem Überdenken der gängigen Aussagen und zur Formulierung von vier Thesen. Sie betreffen 1. die Definition der drei Tongeschlechter in der antiken griechischen Welt - diatonisches, enharmonisches und chromatisches Geschlecht werden durch die drei Mittelwerte bei Archytas definiert 2. den Vergleich des chromatischen Tongeschlechts mit unserer chromatischen Tonleiter - sie sind das gleiche 3. die Herkunft des Begriffes "Chromatik" - der Regenbogen mit seinem Farbenspektrum (Chroma = Farbe) steckt hinter der Namensgebung 4. daraus folgernd den Begriff der Harmonie bei den Pythagoreern: das Farbenspektrum, und nicht die Welt der Musik, ist deren zahlenmäßig definiertes Modell! Damit zeigt sich letzten Endes bei den Pythagoreern eine tiefe Verankerung der zentralen Idee der Zahl in Ontologie und Erkenntnistheorie. Unter anderem stützen gerade die Tonleiter des Timaios und eine bislang falsch zitierte Stelle in den Schriften, die Hippokrates zugeordnet werden, diese Thesen.
About the Author: 1995 wurde Hubert Kupper Mitarbeiter der Abteilung Musikinformatik an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. Als früherer IBM Mitarbeiter war er einer der ersten Wissenschaftler, die gemäß eines Rahmenvertrages zwischen dem Land Rheinland-Pfalz und IBM von der Industrie zur Lehre und Forschung in den universitären Bereich wechselten. Kupper hat Mathematik studiert und sich bereits 1963 mit der Darstellung und Verarbeitung musikalischer Objekte durch Computer befasst. 1970 hat er während seiner Tätigkeit bei der IBM mit einem Thema aus dem Bereich Computer-Mathematik-Musik promoviert. Er kann somit zu den Pionieren der Musikinformatik in Deutschland gerechnet werden. An der Universität in Mainz bot er Lehrveranstaltungen in Systematischer Musikwissenschaft, Musikinformatik und Musikpsychologie an. 1997 wurde er zum Honorarprofessor ernannt. Nach seiner Pensionierung arbeitete er weiter an der Untersuchung musikwissenschaftlicher Fragestellungen.
