About the Book

Two extraordinary scientists, researchers, and teachers-father and son-reminisce about their lives with each other, relating sometimes humorous and at other times less humorous incidents. W. Conway Price, born in Blacksburg, Virginia, in 1906, remembers his father as a disciplinarian, role model, and highly esteemed teacher and administrator at VPI. Harvey Lee Price, born in Blacksburg, Virginia, in 1874, worked his way through college, earning his B.S. degree with honors in Agriculture in 1898. In 1900 he received his MS degree in Horticulture, Entomology, and Mycology. In 1903 Harvey became Head of the Department of Horticulture at VPI and served for thirty-eight years. Harvey shares memories of his son, Conway, who grew up in the small college town of Blacksburg, Virginia, earned his B.S. degree from VPI (now Virginia Tech), and his PhD from Columbia University. He describes some of Conway's escapades as well as his subsequent achievements. Harvey also recalls the influence his own parents had on him as a child and as an adult. Anne Price Yates writes about her father's career as a scientist, researcher, and professor at the University of Pittsburgh and University of Florida as well as his UN-FAO assignment in the Philippines, as a plant virologist. He became "one of the top plant virologists in the world," according to the January 1970 issue of Phytopathology. He is the author of more than 100 papers dealing with viruses of plants. She shares some of her father's letters to her written from 1967 to 1982.
