You've heard people say, "Family is everything."
However, a couple of questions may come to mind such as; "who is family," and "what do they mean by everything?"
The answers will be different for each person, depending on their personal definition of "family."
Some people may define family in the traditional way as mothers, fathers, and children who live in the same household.
However, there are many other types of families.
These may include different living situations and/or a variety of people, who may or may not be genetically linked.
It's true that you can't choose your genetic family. However, you can choose the people you consider as your "family."
Family is a group of people who are "related" to you in some way, whether it's through genes, experiences, beliefs, friendships, or something else entirely.
Family is generally to be the people who support, encourage, comfort, and advise you. They accept you as you are - faults and all.
They are also respectful, loving, trustworthy, and loyal. Your family is your anchor in a storm and the wind beneath your wings.
They are the people who mean the most to you and you mean just as much to them. When people say, "Family is everything," they usually mean that family is a top priority in their lives.
They do not mean that all they need is their family or even that their family members are perfect. Just as each person is unique, the values and feelings you associate with "everything" are personal to you.
A family journal can benefit everyone in your family, depending on how you use it. At different times, a family journal can be a personal activity or a group activity.
Sometimes it may even be both. However, all family journal writings can help family members:
Develop a sense of belonging in the family
Strengthen bonds
Create memories
Find common ground
Learn how they fit into society
Work together to solve problem
Identify with others
Discover their personal beliefs
Develop empathy
Make good choices
Develop self-esteem
Respect themselves and others
Show compassion
Enhance life skills

In order to focus, more on your family, you need to spend more time with them. One of the easiest, and most effective ways to do this is to keep a family journal.
In fact, get them involved by asking members to write about specific family issues or topics from time to time.
When and how long you journal is up to you. Pick a quiet time to write every day. This will help the activity become a habit.
