Esta obra de José Del Rey Fajardo, S.J., profesor de la Universidad Católica Andrés Bello de Caracas, Venezuela y Primer Director de la Academia Nacional de la Historia, sobre la Expulsión, extinción y restauración de los Jesuitas en Venezuela 1767-1815, estudia la trágica y a la vez aleccionadora trilogía (pasión, muerte y resurrección) que escribió la Compañía de Jesús de Venezuela y Colombia en un escaso medio siglo durante el cual se produjo el tránsito del Antiguo al Nuevo Régimen, arrastrada además, por el vendaval que tomó forma de huracán con la Revolución Francesa. Siguiendo la secuela de dicha trilogía, el autor dedica el Libro I de la obra al estudio de la "expulsión" de los jesuitas a partir de la pragmática sanción de 2 de abril de 1767, analizando dicho "extrañamiento" de la Provincia del Nuevo Reino, y cómo se llevó a cabo en cada uno de los domicilios donde residían los jesuitas. Continúa con las itininerancias de los exilados hasta llegar a su destino final en la Legación de Urbino, en Italia, que se asoma al mar Adriático. El Libro II afronta de lleno las consecuencias de la orden de "extinción" total de la Compañía de Jesús adoptada por el papa Clemente XIV mediante el breve Dominus ac redemptor del 21 de julio de 1773, dedicando una gran espacio a los problemas que van desde la redacción del texto abolitorio hasta las exigencias legales para la correcta intimación del decreto en el marco de las relaciones Iglesia-Estado. Más allá de las penurias de los trabajos y los días, se recogen los aportes al "americanismo" en Europa por parte de los extintos neogranadinos. En el Libro III el autor estudia los procesos que tuvieron que seguir las "restauraciones," entre 1779 y 1815, como una guía que ilumina los diversos caminos oficiales, semioficiales y privados restauracionistas recorridos, con referencias a los principales protagonistas de estas singulares historias, entre ellas a la Compañía que nunca murió, que fueron los jesuitas en Bielorrusia, y a otros sobrevivientes. Este libro del padre Del Rey Fajardo concluye con el estudio de la Bula Sollicitudo omnium ecclesiarum promulgada en Roma por el papa, el día 7 de agosto de 1814 por la cual se devolvió al pueblo católico la Compañía de Jesús fundada por Ignacio de Loyola en 1540 y extinguida por Clemente XIV en 1773; con referencia a las diversas reacciones que ocasionó el documento pontificio y los oscuros horizontes que abrió para los extinguidos en 1773. Se trata en fin de una obra fundamental del autor, quien fue Rector fundador de la Universidad Católica del Táchira (Venezuela), y es Presidente del Consejo Superior de la Universidad Valle del Momboy (Valera. Estado Trujillo), que se agrega a su ingente producción histórica, especializada en el estudio de las mentalidades en el Nuevo Reino de Granada, en las formas culturales de las Misiones jesuíticas en la Orinoquia y en la Pedagogía jesuítica colonial.
