El libro trata sobre la vida cotidiana y sobre los intentos por reorganizarse políticamente en el exilio, sobre las relaciones de amistad y romances con muchas muchachas italianas y exiliadas. Sobre la reunión con sus familiares, su ex-mujer y sus hijos. Sobre su lucha por sobrevivir económicamente, sobre la compra de una radio transmisora (en tiempos en que Berlusconi montaba a las suyas) para reivindicar con as transmisiones la lucha contra la dictadura y darle palabra a los grupos extraparlamentarios locales; sobre montar una cadena para traer a gente perseguida de Chile a través de organizaciones religiosas y laicas, sobre su hija que nace a los días de llegar la madre, sobre a enseñanza a su hijo mayor de 4 años, sobre sus trabajos como enseñante de inglés y francés y como bibliotecario en la región de Milano, sobre sus estudios de post-grado en filosofía en Universidad de Torino, sobre su debut como escritor en Berlín Occidental (a lado de acá del muro), sobre el intento fallido de una toma de Consulado Chileno en Milano, sobre discursos, presentaciones folklóricas y conciertos de Quilapayun... Reflexiones filosóficas sobre los antiguos griegos (Heráclito, Paltón, Sócrates, Epicuro) y sobre destacados pensadores de tiempo, como Sartre, Foucault, Bobbio, Freud, los Nuevos Filósofos franceses y una profunda crítica a la visión de mundo marxista. Una vista atrás, a lo que pasó en el 73 y surge una reflexión: "Si Allende, los comunistas (y los otros izquierdistas) habían fracasado después de todo esos intentos de estatalizar y sovietizar a la sociedad chilena usando medios "aparentemente legales"... después que los militares desmantelaron las defensas de la izquierda con el beneplácito de mismo presidente y ya tenían todo en sus manos en el día del golpe... ¿por qué ese ensañamiento demoníaco y esa crueldad contra sus compatriotas?" Nosotros los asilados estábamos fuera del alcance de esas bestias y teníamos la suerte de vivir en uno de los países que, después de dos guerras mundiales, se sentía en e ambiente que la Humanidad, el arte, la convivencia social, el respeto por la persona, la auto-ironía y el humor, todavía contaban. Italia es uno de los pocos países en que cualquiera extranjero con méritos contaba más que un nacional sin ellos. Estas memorias muestran alternativamente el ambiente de opresión chileno con lo interesante de la vida en Italia. Una parte de las memorias están escritas en italiano pero traducidas subrepticiamente (dentro de mismo diálogo) para que las personas de habla castellana las entiendan fácilmente. Las memorias transcurren desde fines de mayo de 1974 hasta fines de septiembre de 1977.
