About the Book

Beginning in early childhood, Iris' world becomes one of distinct contrasts. There are times when she experiences exhilarating joy-as when running and playing with neighborhood friends. At other times, her joy is displaced by confusion, fear, and depression-their source lying dormant in her subconscious mind. Deep down dwells a shameful "secret" which she recalls much later in life. Circumstances drive Iris to experience a life full of challenges. However, she learns to recognize the triggers that turn her joy to fear-the dominant one being a sense of humiliation. Fortunately, she is equipped with a strong survival instinct. Iris reaches out and manages to catch hold of a spiritual entity that welcomes, enfolds, and guides her back to peace when she needs it most. It is the Spirit of God who gives her the love and strength to endure her often rocky road. Prayer is the key that breaks the yoke of fear and discouragement in her life.
About the Author: Iris A. Powell is a long-time poet, playwright, actress, and producer. She began as a child -- directing neighborhood children in spontaneous playacting outdoors and in her home in Sparrows Point, Maryland. During high school, she was active in art, choir, musical theatre and talent shows. She became involved in community theatre after having begun her family of three sons. Her favorite character was "Birdie Lee" in "Tambourines to Glory". She acted in this role several times at Baltimore's College of Notre Dame. Along with her love of theatre, came writing. She has written and produced plays which have been well received at the University of Baltimore and Arena Players, Inc. They include "The Comfort of Another's Arms", "The Gift", and "It's a Cryin' Shame". Ms. Powell has developed the "Popcorn Tree Concept", a language enrichment program for children, designed to promote functional literacy, creative thinking and communications skills. Out of this project came her beloved play "The Popcorn Tree - Cinnamon's Dream". For many years, Ms. Powell has used her skills in public relations, writing and acting to train and entertain children and young adults. She has performed and interacted with groups of pre-schoolers as "Honey Dips", the lovable character from the "Popcorn Tree". Her chief focus has been to assist children in the development of their talents, promote positive self-image, and to lead them into the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. After experiencing fear and depression in her own life, her current work, "Everything to God is Prayer" was written to encourage people of all ages to trust God in the midst of adversity. She believes that developing an active devotional and prayer life can turn seemingly hopeless situations into ones filled with hope.
