Además de cubrir literariamente la autobiografía del Autor (severamente tildada por los sendos padecimientos del trastorno afectivo bipolar de su padre y el suyo propio) y su transición profesional de maestro panadero hacia el ejercicio de la literatura, tiene como grandes protagonistas al pan, como gran alimento milenario y universal, y al no tan antiguo oficio de panadero (conocido en los círculos profesionales como "el arte del buen hacer"), preocupándose singularmente de tratar aspectos como, por ejemplo, sus usos culinarios, la insana ingesta del pan caliente, la pormenorizada lectura de la fisiología del pan y sus metamorfosis durante las distintas etapas de su proceso de elaboración, la importancia capital de la gestión de los tiempos y las temperaturas en el obrador, así como de las estimaciones táctiles por parte del interactivo maestro panadero, los cruciales papeles que éste, la naturaleza y San Honorato -el patrón de los panaderos- juegan sinérgica e interdimensionalmente en todo momento, las peculiaridades del amasado, el sobado, el heñido, la prefermentación, la fermentación, el sesgado, la cocción y el rezumamiento de las piezas, las adversidades y fortunas que entran o pueden acaecer a lo largo del evolutivo y mutante proceso de elaboración, la historia de la rural tahona, las singularidades de los ingredientes y sus interactuaciones naturales físicas, químicas y energéticas, la descripción biológica de la levadura y cómo ésta juega su capital papel; la maquinaria, sus características y funciones; la milenaria y universal historia de la panificación; una cotidiana jornada en un obrador artesano; los distintos métodos de elaboración; la visita turística al molino de Serradilla, los nutrientes del pan y el gran papel que éste juega dentro de la alimentación humana; las peculiaridades del mercado panadero de la ciudad de Cáceres en la época en que se cifra esta novela, la disciplina y código de honor del maestro panadero, la histórica y mística relación existente entre el pan, la religión cristiana (donde se ofrece como única materia hábil para la celebración de la eucaristía) y su consagración y transubstanciación en la misa, una artística y original "Exposición de Panes Imposibles" que el Autor hizo en su día en el Complejo Cultural San Francisco, las singularidades del sourdough (o "pan amargo americano"), las virtudes de la espelta, una veraniega jornada de trabajo minuciosamente tratada, así como las sumamente incrementadas del mes de agosto (en que la población de Encinar -que es el ficticio nombre escogido por el Autor para el geográfico enclave en que tiene lugar esta obra- se multiplica por diez con el masivo y pasajero regreso vacacional de los emigrantes y sus familias), la vergonzosa, pecaminosa y significativa carencia de promoción social del pan, así como la ausencia cuasitotal de cultura panadera de la población moderna, el decaído mes de septiembre característico de Encinar, la sabática noche libre del semanal descanso, dos oportunos golpes de suerte empresarial que me entraron un tanto tarde, los copiosos y altruistas papeles que, colateralmente, desempeña a diario Elisa -la madre del maestro panadero, y reflejo de la mía-; el más normalizado modus vivendi que proporciona la instalación de una cámara de fermentación controlada; el obrador como gran escuela personal; la fascinante erótica de la panificación artesanal y su ilimitada creatividad que le ha valido a nuestro oficio ser calificado como "el más bello del mundo" (aunque el versado Autor, empíricamente, osa equipararlo con el de literato); la íntima identificación (como Artista Genial) con Ludwig van Beethoven (a quien se le ha definido como "el compositor que mejor ha sabido hablarle al alma humana"), los papeles del pan dentro de la hostelería y, para finalizar, el tratado del marco en que se ofrece la época navideña de este libro.
