La eutanasia y la ayuda a morir son dilemas del final de la vida sobre los que mucho se ha debatido a través de la historia. Desde luego que, dependiendo desde el ángulo que se contemple, se llegará a visiones divergentes. Se debe escuchar lo que los científicos, los filósofos y los religiosos nos tienen que decir. Cada uno por su lado tiene algo que exteriorizar. En este texto se formula una particular perspectiva humanista sobre estos temas que nos puede ayudar a considerar ciertos aspectos que poco se discuten. El doctor Roberto Gutiérrez Laboy, docente de Humanidades y Bioética, propone una dimensión humanista con el propósito de motivar al lector a reflexionar interdisciplinariamente sobre uno de los asuntos que todos algún día tendremos que enfrentar.
About the Author: Roberto Gutiérrez Laboy es Catedrático de Humanidades en la Facultad de Estudios Generales de Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Río Piedras. En esa Facultad he dictado los cursos de Humanidades y Bioética y Derechos Humanos, entre otros, y en la Facultad de Ciencias Naturales he enseñado el curso de Bioética. Asimismo, ha ofrecido cursillos en el Recinto de Ciencias Médicas de la misma institución. Dirigió el Departamento de Humanidades por cuatro años y ocupó interinamente los cargos de Decano Asociado de Asuntos Académicos y Decano de Facultad. La UPR le distinguió como Catedrático de Honor Eugenio María de Hostos durante el año académico 2008-2009, uno de los mayores reconocimientos académicos que otorga esa institución. Realizó los grados académicos en literatura y filosofía en las universidades de Montclair (bachillerato), Fordham (maestría) y Rutgers (doctorado). Recientemente ha realizado estudios de bioética, filosofía y derechos humanos con las universidades Nacional Autónoma de México, Oxford, Nacional de Mar del Plata y la Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales. Ha sido profesor y dictado conferencias en diversas universidades de Estados Unidos, el Brasil, Santo Domingo y Puerto Rico tales como Seton Hall, City University of New York, Fordham, Essex, Federal de Paraná (Curitiba, Brasil), Federal del Amazonas (Manaos, Brasil) e Interamericana de Puerto Rico, entre otras. Ha publicado ensayos y artículos en periódicos y revistas de Europa, Puerto Rico, Brasil, Argentina y Estados Unidos. Es autor de los libros: Puerto Rico: Tema y motivo en la poesía hispánica (New York, 1980), Hostos y su filosofía moral (Lajas, Puerto Rico, 1992), El discurso moral en Eugenio María de Hostos y otros ensayos (Buenos Aires, 2005), La fragilidad humana y otros ensayos: Reflexiones humanísticas (Madrid 2005), Ética a Ana Laura: Hacia una ética humanista (Madrid, 2008), Pensar y entender a Hostos (San Juan, 2009), Eugenio María Hostos: Precursor de la bioética en América Latina (Santo Domingo, 2010) y Humanidades, Bioética, Derechos humanos (San Juan, 2013).
