Der Schwerpunkt der Betrachtung liegt hierbei auf der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, daneben aber auch auf Frankreich und Großbritannien, da diese aus historischen Gründen nach wie vor stark im Gebiet der Internationalen Diplomatie tätig sind und die größten Volkswirtschaften innerhalb der Europäischen Union darstellen. Zudem verfügen Frankreich und Großbritannien über einen ständigen Sitz im Sicherheitsrat der Vereinten Nationen, womit sie erheblichen Einfluss auf die internationalen Entwicklungen und Entscheidungen der Vereinten Nationen haben. Als Untersuchungsgegenstand soll beispielhaft der Militäreinsatz in Libyen im Jahr 2011 dienen. Dabei geht es ausdrücklich nicht um eine Einordnung der Revolution oder detaillierte Betrachtung der einzelnen innerstaatlichen Konfliktparteien, sondern darum, die strategischen Interessen der zu untersuchenden Staaten im konkreten Fall aufzuzeigen. Auch die Einzelheiten der Resolution 1973 des Sicherheitsrats der Vereinten Nationen sowie weitere Resolutionen, Gipfeltreffen und aktuelle Entwicklungen in Libyen werden nicht einbezogen, da dies im Rahmen dieser Arbeit nicht zufriedenstellend behandelt werden kann.
