Die, die es betrifft hören am liebsten weg oder wechseln schnell das Thema. Vielleicht ist das die Ursache für viele Defizite im Umgang mit Dementen Menschen. 70% vielleicht sogar 80 % der Demenz Kranken werden von Angehörigen gepflegt. Eine äußerst schwierige Aufgabe an der so mancher zerbricht, denn Pflegende sind rund um die Uhr gefordert. Wenn die Pflege zu Hause nicht mehr möglich ist, bleibt nur ein Heimeinzug als Alternative übrig. Das pflegende Personal und andere Bewohner werden mit Menschen konfrontiert die aus der vertrauten Welt entrückt sind und in einer eigenen Welt leben. Im täglichen Umgang mit Dementen, alten Menschen auf unserer Station wird viel über "Verhalten" gesprochen. Es herrscht jedoch ein auf Unsicherheit basierendes Handeln und oft sind Mitarbeiter im Umgang mit weglaufenden, schreienden, aggressiven oder auch apathischen Bewohnern im Stationsalltag überfordert. Was eine demenzkranke Person erlebt, (noch) denken kann, fühlt, entspricht nicht der "normalen" Alltagserfahrung. Die Gefahr des Ausgrenzens, des "für Verrückt-Erklärens" ist groß, verbunden mit der Gefahr, diese kranken Menschen zu verwahren und ruhig zu stellen. Das Helfen ist schwer, denn eine Verständigung ist auf gewohnten Wegen nur wenig möglich. Die Haut - Nähe bei der Betreuung ist wichtig, die Anforderungen, einfühlsame Versorgung zu bieten, sind sehr hoch. Die Pflegepersonen sind ständig herausgefordert, die eigene Normalität zu bewahren und sich zugleich auf den "Sinn" der Verwirrten einzustellen. Es ist schwer, sich einer unverständlichen fremden Welt zu nähern, die der eigenen Alltagswelt gemäß unsinnig ist. Die Pflegepersonen müssen sich selbst zu schützen wissen, wenn sie andere (demenzkranke) Menschen schützen wollen.
