En quelques secondes par une belle nuit de l'année 1996, la vie de Maeva SHELTON va basculer dans un cauchemar. Son amour des orchidées qui ornent les billets de banques colombiens deviendra son seul espoir de liberté. Elle restera durant 10 jours l'otage des guérilleros de l'ELN. Maeva fait le récit de cette captivité avec sa douceur de femme passionnée par la culture des fleurs et plus particulièrement des orchidées et des bonsaïs, sa tendresse pour la Colombie, son pays d'accueil, et le souvenir de sa terre d'origine, Tahiti. Mais elle cherche aussi à comprendre et à partager. Comprendre une guerre qui fait 25.000 morts par an, ces guérilleros qui enrôlent 11.000 enfants dans leur combat, et ce pays qui reste le premier exportateur de cocaïne. Maeva est étonnante, malgré la peur, elle tente de partager ses passions avec ses ravisseurs, comme avec ses lecteurs, et en conclusion elle nous offre quelques recettes culinaires de son pays d'adoption.
About the Author: Née à Tahiti le 1er mars 1950, d'origine polynésienne, américaine et européenne, Maeva SHELTON part en 1967 suivre des études en France puis en Californie. Elle a vécu 22 ans en Colombie où elle a fondé une famille; elle est mère de 2 enfants. En Colombie elle vivra un enlèvement par les révolutionnaires de l'ELN. Dans son premier livre "... et j'ai cueilli des orchidées" elle présentera la chronique de ses dix jours de captivité. Elle revient en 1999 à Tahiti. Très jeune, elle a compris l'importance de la nature et de la nourriture grâce à sa mère et à son entourage. Après avoir écrit deux livres de recettes (salées et sucrées) de cuisine internationale, elle publie une série de petits cahiers de recettes simples et pratiques, avec des thématiques de produits du Pacifique Sud. La vanille, et les produits du "Fenua" (terre ou terroir en langue tahitienne) sont les deux premiers. Nombre de ces produits sont aujourd'hui en vente en France et ailleurs comme par exemple le taro, les plantains, le manioc. D'autres comme le fafa peuvent être remplacés par des épinards, ce qui rend ces recettes adaptées à la plupart des pays du monde. Dans un autre ouvrage, elle a décidé de révéler aux consommateurs des informations mal connues du grand public voire faussées qui mettent en danger leur santé. C'est par une prise de conscience que chacun arrivera à se prendre en main afin de mener une vie harmonieuse et jouir d'une bonne santé au sein d'un monde que chacun contribue à créer.
