Concepción Arenal Ponte (Ferrol (La Coruña) 31 de enero de 1820 - Vigo (Pontevedra) 4 de febrero de 1893) fue una importante escritora española realista vinculada al pionero movimiento feminista de finales del siglo XIX.Nacida en una casa del barrio conocido como Ferrol Vello, su padre, Ángel Arenal Cuesta, fue un eminente militar (sargento mayor, rango equivalente al de Teniente Coronel con funciones mixtas de Intervención e Intendencia) que sufrió muchas veces represión por su ideología liberal y por estar en contra del régimen monárquico absolutista del rey Fernando VII. A consecuencia de sus estancias en prisión, cayó enfermo y murió en 1829, quedando Concepción huérfana de padre a los 9 años. En ese mismo año, marcha con su madre, María Concepción Ponte Mandiá Tenreiro y sus dos hermanas, Luisa y Antonia, a Armaño (Cantabria), a casa de su abuela paterna, donde recibió una férrea formación religiosa. Un año después, fallece su hermana Luisa. En 1834 se trasladan a Madrid, con ayuda de su pariente Antonio Tenreiro, segundo Conde de Vigo, donde Concepción estudia en un colegio para señoritas. Siete años después entra, contra la voluntad de su madre, como oyente en la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad Central de Madrid, vistiendo ropas masculinas, puesto que en la época la educación universitaria estaba vedada a las mujeres. Vestida también de hombre, Concepción participa en tertulias políticas y literarias, luchando así contra lo establecido en la época para la condición femenina.Acabada la carrera, se casó en 1848 con el también abogado y escritor Fernando García Carrasco. Años después colaborarían juntos en el periódico liberal La Iberia, hasta que en 1857 Fernando murió de tuberculosis. Concepción viuda y con dos hijos (Fernando, 1850 y Ramón, 1852) se trasladó a Potes (Cantabria) donde conoce a un joven músico Jesús de Monasterio, alumno de Santiago Masarnau, primer presidente de las Conferencias de San Vicente de Paúl, que la invita a fundar en 1859 el grupo femenino de las Conferencias de San Vicente de Paúl para ayuda de los pobres. Para ellas, Concepción escribe en 1860, La beneficencia, la filantropía y la caridad, que dedica a la Condesa de Espoz y Mina, y que presentará al concurso que convoca la Academia de Ciencias Morales y Políticas, bajo el nombre de su hijo Fernando, que tiene entonces 10 años. Después de una serie de conflictos sobre la forma incorrecta de introducir su escrito en el concurso, se le concede el premio y será la primera mujer premiada por la Academia.En 1863 se convierte también en la primera mujer que recibe el título de Visitadora de Cárceles de Mujeres, cargo que ostentó hasta 1865. Posteriormente publicó libros de poesía y ensayo como Cartas a los delincuentes (1865), Oda a la esclavitud (1866) -que fue premiada por la Sociedad Abolicionista de Madrid-, El reo, el pueblo y el verdugo o La ejecución de la pena de muerte (1867). En 1868, es nombrada Inspectora de Casas de Corrección de Mujeres, y tres años después, en 1871, comienza a colaborar con la revista La Voz de la Caridad, de Madrid, en la que escribe durante catorce años sobre las miserias del mundo que la rodea.En 1872 funda la Constructora Benéfica, una sociedad que se dedica a la construcción de casas baratas para obreros. Posteriormente también colabora organizando en España la Cruz Roja del Socorro, para los heridos de las guerras carlistas, poniéndose al frente de un hospital de campaña para los heridos de guerra en Miranda de Ebro. En 1877 publica Estudios Penitenciarios.Monumento a Concepción Arenal en La Coruña.Con Concepción Arenal nace el feminismo en España. Como los krausistas otorga a la educación e instrucción de la mujer un papel fundamental, pues Concepción dirá que la mujer no tiene otra carrera que el matrimonio. Pues los hombres aprenden un oficio, las mujeres no.
