Se le considera uno de los doce profetas menores de la Biblia hebrea y fue contemporáneo de los profetas Isaías, Amós y Oseas. Miqueas era de Moresheth-Gath en el suroeste de Judá. Profetizó durante los reinados de los reyes Jotam, Acaz y Ezequías de Judá. Los mensajes de Miqueas estaban dirigidos principalmente a Jerusalén. (ca. 740-705). Sin embargo, no se le menciona ni en el libro de los Reyes ni en Isaías, pero en Jer 26:18 se cita la palabra de Miqueas contra el templo, 3:12. No se conocen más detalles biográficos de Micah.
El libro puede leerse como un triple ritmo de anuncio del juicio y la salvación (otros estudiosos ven sólo un doble esquema, pero véanse las nuevas inserciones en 3:1 y 6:1). Este esquema no es ciertamente original, al igual que se discute la autenticidad de partes enteras del libro completo. Así, las partes más grandes de los caps. 4-7 se consideran ciertamente posteriores, y las revisiones del Deuteronomio se ven también en los caps. 1-3.
El contenido del Libro de Miqueas está determinado por una denuncia categórica de los agravios sociales (como Amós para el Reino del Norte). Sobre todo, es probable que se trate de cuestiones relacionadas con los derechos sobre la tierra (véase, por ejemplo, 2:4 ss.). La clase alta expropia a los pequeños agricultores por medios legalmente impecables, pero les priva así de la herencia a la que tienen derecho de Dios (véase más arriba sobre Rut). Miqueas espera el juicio de Dios sobre Samaria (?), Judá y Jerusalén (¡no las naciones!), sólo puede imaginar la venida de YHWH como una obra destructiva. En el capítulo 3, los jefes, los príncipes y los profetas son culpados de la situación. Deberían saber lo que es correcto, pero ellos mismos odian el bien y aman el mal (3:2).

También es importante en Miqueas, como en Isaías, el significado especial de la idea de Sión. Sus oponentes lo retoman con el comentario "¿No está Dios en medio de nosotros? Ningún mal puede venir sobre nosotros" (3:11). Frente a esta garantía de salvación (cf. Jer 7 en cuanto al contenido) Miqueas anuncia la destrucción: "Jerusalén se convertirá en un montón de ruinas y el Monte del Templo en una colina boscosa" (3:12).
Los capítulos 4 y 5, en cambio, vuelven a centrarse en Sión como garantía de salvación. Las naciones irán en peregrinación a Sión, desde allí surgirá el reino de la paz. El capítulo 5 profetiza el Mesías davídico de Belén. El capítulo 6 resume las exigencias de Dios a su pueblo; 6:8 lo resume de nuevo (probablemente más tarde), "A ti, hombre, se te dice lo que es bueno y lo que el Señor exige de ti: no hacer nada más que lo que es correcto (מִשְׁפָּט, mispāt) y amar lo que es bueno y caminar visiblemente con Dios." Esta frase se considera en el judaísmo como la suma total de los 613 mandamientos de la Torá.
