Ce trait� serait bien plus utile encore, Si] �tait fait par un ma�tre. On n'y trouverait pas seulement les meilleurs proc�d�s d'ex�cution, on pourrait sans doute y recueillir des le�ons bien plus pr�cieuses, des conseils pour l'invention et la disposition des sujets, des id�es lumineuses sur les divers moyens de frap per, d'�mouvoir, de s�duire les coeurs. Voil� les enseignements que nous allons chercher dans les �crits de Corneille sur l'art dramatique.

S'il avait compos� une po�tique pour enseigner ses doc trines, il suffirait de le lire. Mais il �crivait bien moins, sans doute, pour publier les secrets de son art, que pour d�fendre ses ouvrages; il �crivait pour un public qui l'abandonnait, et dont il �tait prudent de m�nager les go�ts les opinions et m�me les pr�jug�s; il �crivait enfin sous l'oeil de ses critiques et de ses rivaux, pr�ts � tirer avantage de toutes ses impru deuces. Il y a donc dans ses discours et ses examens une exposition de principes et une apologie, qu'il faut avoir soin de distinguer; il y a des r�ticences, des concessions, des insinua tions, qui ont besoin d'�tre expliqu�es. On voit l� Corneille en public, ou, pour mieux dire, en pays ennemi, toujours en d� fiance et en garde; nous t�cherons de le surprendre dans son naturel, dans sa franchise et sa simplicit�, c'est-�-dire dans sa grandeur.

Mais, pour atteindre ce but, quelle est la marche � suivre! Prendrons - nous successivement la pr�face et l'examen de cha que pi�ce, pour en extraire la substance? Ce serait s'exposer � la fois � des redites et � des omissions; ce serait ranger, dans de petits cadres, une s�rie de trait�s partiels sur des questions particuli�res, au lieu d'offrir, dans son ensemble, un tableaug�n�ral et bien ordonn� de l'art dramatique. Chercherons - nous � quelle �poque, et sous quelles influences, ont pu na�tre et se d�velopper les id�es et les th�ories du po�te? Il serait curieux, sans doute d'assister � l'�ducation de ce grand g�nie; de rechercher ce qu il a re�u de ses ma�tres ou de ses mod�les, et ce qu'il a tir� de son propre fonds; les le�ons de l'exp�rience dont il a profit�, et les exigences de son si�cle qu'il a subies. Mais sans parler des difficult�s d'une pareille �tude, de l'incertitude des conjectures o� l'on serait r�duit, par l'absence de documents pr�cis, il faudrait examiner chaque question, � mesure que Corneille s'en est occup�, et renoncer, par cons� quent, � cette suite logique, � cet ordre naturel que recom mande Horace et qui selon lui produit la lumi�re. Mieux vaut, je crois, suivre une autre marche celle de la nature. Quand un po�te songe � composer une trag�die, parmi les cent questions qui s'offrent en tumulte � son esprit, et r�clament son attention, il en est qu'il doit ajourner, il en est qu'il doit exa miner tout d'abord. Il est clair, par exemple, qu'avant de faire parler ses'personnages, il faut qu'il les connaisse; et que, pour les bien choisir, il a besoin de savoir les qualit�s qui leur sont n�cessaires le r�le auquel il les destine, et les effets qu'il en attend; qu avant tout, enfin, il doit savoir quel est le but qu'il se propose, que] est le but de la trag�die. C'est aussi la ques tion que Corneille aborde la premi�re c'est donc par elle que commencera cette �tude.
