Cuando los conquistadores hispanos llegaron a América o las indias, había expresiones retóricas y también literarias, desarrolladas por los nativos prehispánicos; fundamentalmente a través de la oralidad. El articulado memorístico era la manera de transmisión de estas formas expresivas que mutaron con la llegada de los españoles hacia la forma escrita del sistema alfabético.
Sin embargo, hubo, antes de este momento de transición lingüística, textos sagrados, rituales poéticos y dramáticos que se habían transferido en parte, por medio de la escritura jeroglífica y pictográfica.
Entre las culturas que destacan por su legado, cabe mencionar la cultura náhuatl o azteca (Valle de Anáhuac, México) y la Maya (península de Yucatán y Guatemala) en lo que refiere a escritura, y la inca (Perú y Ecuador); en relación a la literatura oral, bastante desarrollada en esta etnia.
En el vasto y variado territorio de la América tuvieron su asentamiento numerosas y antiguas civilizaciones que muestran, una vez más, el riquísimo pasado cultural de América. Tanto en las costas del Pacífico como Atlántico; como en las elevadas y frías sierras y mesetas, o en las tierras de selva tropical, donde se encuentran vestigios relevantes de la humanidad habitante de estas regiones que desarrollaron durante centurias, su cultura en estas zonas del orbe.

No todos, por cierto, alcanzaron el mismo nivel de desarrollo. Mientras en algunas regiones la humanidad no sobrepaso el nivel de vida de comunidades rudimentarias, en otras sus progresiones desde épocas tempranas articularon complejas y elevadas formas de vida, bajo sociedades divididas en clases y con una eficaz orgánica política estatal de sustento.
El Descubrimiento de América define un encuentro significativo en la humanidad por cuanto el año 1492 Cristóbal Colón al atravesar el mar Atlántico delimita el comienzo de la era moderna en la historia. La humanidad ha descubierto la totalidad de la que forman parte en el planeta Tierra. El viaje del navegante genovés es un desplazamiento hacia lo desconocido, hacia la incerteza. Colón no podía tener la certeza que al final del océano no estuviera el abismo y, por lo tanto, la caída al vacío; o bien de que ese viaje hacia el oeste no fuera el descenso de una larga cuesta, y que después no fuera demasiado difícil volverla a subir, es decir, no podía tener la certeza de que el regreso fuera posible .

Escritura, cultura y literatura en el período prehispánico y colonial referencia aspectos de carácter histórico acaecidos en territorio americano. Se configura desde inquietudes al suceder pasado, y como se articulan las distintas culturas en una geografía diversa y extensa desconocida para los europeos hasta el siglo XV. De ese modo se presentan sucesos de las culturas azteca, maya y quechua; pero de igual modo, de los acontecimientos vividos por los exploradores y conquistadores europeos que hicieron de América su espacio nuclear, y que insigne fama les reportó en las páginas de la Historia universal.
El texto se conforma, además, desde indagaciones a facetas escriturales como las desarrolladas por el poeta Nezahualcóyotl; o el cronista criollo Gómez Suárez de Figueroa, cuya rúbrica célebre es la de Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. Autor de una valiosa prosa en sus afamados Comentarios Reales.
Un último elemento presente es la vertiente humanista presente en el pensamiento
del religioso español de la orden dominica Fray Gil González. Defensor y promotor de los derechos humanos de los pueblos indígenas durante la Conquista. Y en el eximio americanista y humanista venezolano Francisco de Miranda a través de su carta dirigida a los españoles americanos.
El libro traza un recorrido por un periodo trascendental de la historia moderna donde el encuentro de América y Europa configura lo nuevo, lo mestizo, lo criollo.
