El esclavo del demonio es una obra maestra del teatro barroco español, escrita por Antonio Mira de Amescua. Se destaca como una de las mejores comedias religiosas de la España del Siglo de Oro. La trama se centra en la leyenda de frey Gil de Santarem, un monje portugués que, hastiado de la vida ascética, decide hacer un pacto con el Diablo para obtener poderes en la nigromancia, vendiéndole su alma en el proceso.

La obra es una revisión barroca de la leyenda faústica, que existe desde el siglo VI, pero que alcanzó gran popularidad en diferentes variantes a lo largo de los siglos. La versión de Mira de Amescua se adelanta incluso a la interpretación más famosa del mito por Goethe. El texto habla del conflicto entre el bien y el mal, la tentación, y la búsqueda de poder a cualquier costo, todo ello enmarcado en un contexto religioso y moral.

La primera jornada introduce a Marcelo, un hombre mayor, y sus hijas Lisarda y Leonor. Este fragmento nos da una idea de los valores y las preocupaciones que guían a los personajes en la obra. Marcelo, reflexionando sobre las estaciones de la vida y su propia mortalidad, busca asegurar el futuro de sus hijas: una a través del matrimonio y la otra a través de la vida religiosa. Estas elecciones de vida, que parecen simples en la superficie, adquieren un significado más profundo en el contexto de una obra que explora las consecuencias eternas de las decisiones terrenales.

Lo notable de esta obra es cómo utiliza la estructura y los tropos de la comedia para tratar temas espirituales y éticos de gran peso. La dicotomía entre la vida mundana y la vida espiritual se presenta no solo a través del personaje del monje portugués sino también en los personajes secundarios, quienes, cada uno a su manera, enfrentan elecciones morales que reflejan las tensiones más amplias entre el bien y el mal, el deber y el deseo, y la vida terrenal y la eterna.
