About the Book

On the Winter Solstice, in the Place of Possibility, spirit babies are delivered to prospective angel parents. When Father Time trips on his scythe, the delivery of spirit baby, SB-94 goes awry. The cherub falls to earth and is rescued by Angelica. He grows at an alarming speed and is able to speak by Christmas morning. A misunderstanding about his designation, leads Angelica to call him, Esbe. Angelica's parents cannot see Esbe, but the cherub thinks she should reveal his presence. A good-natured argument follows. By spring, Esbe will be visible to everyone Angelica prepares a hide-out in the woods. Shortly after moving in, Esbe wanders off and discovers an injured animal. Together, they rescue the possum and Esbe names her, Grannie. That night, Esbe wrestles with a deriding voice and is comforted by the warm glow of his halo. Esbe's parents, Solarus and Lumenara, begin the search for their cherub. First, they meet an Indian shaman, who has seen the descent of an angel-like spark, landing in the east, where the "hole in the sky was born." The angels follow this clue to Huntsville, Alabama, home of early rocket research. They meet, Sareel, a helpful alien, who has heard the riddle of the "hole in the sky." Sareel takes them to meet Helvi, a cantankerous environmentalist who claims to know the whereabouts of the lost cherub. Helvi won't give up her information, until the angels help her. After removing pollution from woods and streams and making speeches for Sareel, Solarus and Lumenara go to Oakridge, Tennessee, hoping this is the place where the "hole in the sky was born." They meet Grannie, the possum and learn that she was healed by a "light in a box. Finding the hide-out, the cherub's wings, and the glowing halo, they head into town for more information. In the meantime, Esbe's meets, Rachela, a fairy queen, and falls in love. He writes a love note, and hides it in the halo's box. Angelica finds the note. A tense conversation ensues. Angelica spends time away from Esbe, but he finds her at the home of Countess Jasminuska, a flamboyant Russian who owns exotic dolls. As Esbe and Angelica talk, the Countess enters the room and takes a picture. The photo will appear in the newspaper-- the next day. Though visible to the camera, Esbe is not mentioned in the article. Leaving the newspaper at Possum Place, Angelica and Esbe hurry to find Rachela. Moments later, Solarus and Lumenara return to the hut, find the newspaper and discover Rachel watching them. As they question the fairy, Esbe and Angelica return. Reunited at last with his angel parents, Esbe leaves immediately for his heavenly training. Afterwards, Angelica and the languishing Rachela become friends. As Angelica gives Rachela the love note which Esbe had hidden, she hears Esbe's voice, "Use the wings." Angelica presses Esbe's wings onto Rachela's back and the fairy is lifted into the air to join Esbe. Now, in high school, Angelica, meets Terrance. Their mutual interest in saving worms, leads to a romantic friendship. She reveals the story of Esbe, but the halo's location remains her secret. Time passes. Angelica rocks her baby son and remembers when Terrance asked her to marry him. Afraid of losing a friend, she had held back her decision at first. But when she went to retrieve the halo from its hiding place, she found it had been transformed into a gold ring and Esbe's voice was speaking to her, "Give him the ring."
