"Es werde dunkel" Der Buchtitel ist natürlich nicht als eine schwarze Sicht auf die Zukunft des Kinos gemeint. Dem Autor geht es vornehmlich darum, die Atmosphäre und den Zauber einer vergangenen Ära einzufangen und den Leser mitzunehmen auf eine spannende Zeitreise zum Thema Filmtechnik. Denn wenn es in den Vorführungen der Kopierwerke zur Abnahme dunkel wurde und die Filmschaffenden ihr Werk zum letzten Mal vor der Premiere auf der Leinwand sahen, dann hatten viele Mitarbeiter - Frauen und Männer, die nie im Abspann genannt wurden, ihren Anteil am Gelingen des Films. An alle die, die beim spärlichen Licht einer Dunkelkammerleuchte an der Kopiermaschine standen, die bei völliger Dunkelheit Rohfilm konfektionierten oder Chemikaliendämpfen an den Entwicklungsmaschinen ausgesetzt waren, die täglich mit Filmleim und Schabemesser höchste Konzentration beim Schneiden brauchten, soll mit diesem Buch erinnert werden. Während seines Berufslebens hat der Autor in vielen Gesprächen immer wieder Fragen zur technischen Entstehung eines Films beantwortet. Daraus entstand die Idee des Buches über eine fiktive Begegnung mit einem Schulfreund und einem daraus folgenden Dialog zum Thema Filmtechnik. Den Leser erwartet kein Fachbuch, aber es werden viele interessante und wichtige Daten zur Technik erwähnt, welche jedoch keinen Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit erheben. Sollte der Leser, durch die Wanderungen der Protagonisten, zu einem Besuch Berlins angeregt werden, so kann er bei dieser Gelegenheit die Schauplätze des Buches aufsuchen. Beispielsweise das DEFA Kopierwerk in Berlin-Johannisthal, am Groß-Berliner Damm 71. Vom ehemaligen Firmenkomplex ist nur noch das Hauptgebäude erhalten, dessen restaurierte Fassade den Baustil noch gut erkennen lässt. Es ist heute ein Hotel. Die Geyer-Werke in der Harzer Straße 39 in Berlin Neukölln erkennt man sofort an dem wunderschönen alten Schriftzug GEYER=WERKE A.G.
