Im Mittelpunkt des Buchs steht die private und unveröffentlichte Korrespondenz zwischen dem deutschen Juden Josef Schwab und Adolf Hitlers Lieblingsarchitekten und Rüstungsminister Albert Speer. Die Korrespondenz steht in Privatbesitz und wurde der Autorin exklusiv für dieses Buch zur Verfügung gestellt. Josef Schwab, geb. 1898, entstammte einer angesehenen jüdischen Familie aus Nürnberg. Er war verheiratet, Vater eines Sohnes, im ersten Weltkrieg mit dem Eisernen Kreuz ausgezeichnet und führte in dritter Generation die Ledergroßhandlung seines Großvaters. Unter der Folter der Nationalsozialisten emigrierte er 1938 mit seiner Familie in die USA. 30 Jahre später veröffentlichte Albert Speer in Deutschland sein Buch "Erinnerungen". Nach Verbüßung seiner 20-jährigen Haftstrafe im Kriegsverbrechergefängnis Spandau, machte er sich einen Ruf als "Gentleman-Nazi", der von den Verbrechen der Nazi-Diktatur nichts gewusst und als einziger Mann aus dem Umfeld Hitlers ein reines Gewissen hatte. Josef Schwab, ein ausgesprochen direkter und scharfzüngiger Mann, hielt mit seiner Meinung dazu nicht hinter dem Berg. Er schrieb einen Brief an den Verlag Speers. Zu seiner Überraschung erhielt er die Antwort darauf von Albert Speer persönlich. Dies war der Auftakt einer regen Korrespondenz, die sich über drei Jahre ausdehnte und erst mit dem Tod Josef Schwabs im Jahr 1972 endete. Sie ist geprägt von einem Wechsel von heiß zu kalt, von Auseinandersetzungen und Annäherungen, und immer wieder bohrenden Fragen Josef Schwabs. Sie fasziniert durch den langen Prozess, den die beiden Männer durchlaufen und der schlussendlich, trotz aller bestehenbleibenden Differenzen, darin mündet, dass sowohl Josef Schwab als auch Albert Speer sich als Freunde betrachteten. Das Buch enthält die vollständige Korrespondenz der beiden Männer. Darüber hinaus hat die Autorin umfangreiche Recherchen zum Leben Josef Schwabs unternommen, die in einem biografischen Teil des Buchs umgesetzt sind.

Ausgestattet mit Spürsinn, Sensibilität und Beharrlichkeit, ging sie für Ihr Erstlingswerk "Es wäre zum Lachen, wenn's nicht zum Weinen wäre..." auf die Suche nach den Spuren des jüdischen Kaufmanns Josef Schwab aus Nürnberg, der in den Jahren 1969 bis 1972 eine intensive Korrespondenz mit Adolf Hitlers "Freund", Rüstungsminister und Lieblingsarchitekten Albert Speer führte.
