En 1681, un holandés llamado Johann Wilhelm Vogel señaló "Vi con asombro que la isla de Krakatoa, en mi primer viaje a Sumatra [junio de 1679] completamente verde y sana de árboles, yacía completamente quemada y estéril ante nuestros ojos y que en cuatro puntos vomitaba grandes trozos de fuego. Y cuando pregunté al capitán del barco cuándo había entrado en erupción la citada isla, me dijo que había ocurrido en mayo de 1680... Me mostró un trozo de piedra pómez tan grande como su puño".

Sin embargo, nadie podría haberse preparado para el alcance de la erupción de 1883, que fue tan violenta que destruyó la mayor parte de la isla de Krakatoa y pudo oírse a unos 5.000 kilómetros de distancia. La fuerza de la explosión fue equivalente a cuatro veces la del arma nuclear más potente jamás detonada, y la dispersión de ceniza y lava, así como los tsunamis generados por la fuerza de la erupción, acabaron matando al menos a 35.000 personas (y posiblemente a más de 100.000) en todas las Indias Orientales Holandesas. Con columnas de humo que se elevaban a más de 80 kilómetros de altura, la erupción del Krakatoa influyó en todo el clima mundial durante varios años, y los escombros y cadáveres siguieron llegando a las costas del Pacífico durante todo ese tiempo.
