Sie dienen der Kommunikation und der sozialen Interaktion und helfen uns, das eigene Verhalten schnell und flexibel an Situationen anzupassen. Ein Beispiel: Ein Freund von Ihnen rennt mit einem wütenden Gesicht auf Sie zu. Sie sehen seinen Gesichtsausdruck und interpretieren ihn als "Ärger" oder "Wut". Ihr Verhalten in dieser Situation wird sich sehr wahrscheinlich von dem unterscheiden, welches Sie zeigen würden, wenn Ihr Freund mit einem lachenden Gesicht auf Sie zukommt. Eine adäquate Reaktion in einer sozialen Situation setzt die korrekte Interpretation des emotionalen Ausdrucks voraus. Emotionen dienen aber nicht nur der Kommunikation, sondern sie können auch Einfluss auf die Gedächtnisleistungen eines Individuums nehmen. Als eine zentrale Struktur für die Emotionsverarbeitung und für emotionale Gedächtnisprozesse wird die Amygdala angesehen. Diese spielt insbesondere in Gefahrensituationen eine außerordentliche Rolle: Sie wird als das Zentrum angesehen, das eine Information als Gefahr interpretiert und entsprechende Handlungsanweisungen an andere Abteilungen im Gehirn sendet, wodurch die Überlebenschancen eines Individuums in einer tatsächlichen Gefahrensituation enorm gesteigert werden. Dies setzt aber voraus, dass ein Stimulus, der auf eine Gefahr hindeutet, sehr schnell verarbeitet wird. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird an Jugendlichen in der späten Adoleszenz überprüft, ob Stimuli, die auf eine Gefahr hindeuten, tatsächlich schneller verarbeitet werden als Stimuli, die auf keine Gefahr schließen lassen. Als Stimuli werden dabei negative, ärgerliche und positive, freudige Gesichtsausdrücke eingesetzt, die es zu erkennen gilt. Die Verarbeitungszeit selbst wird in Form von Reaktionszeiten festgehalten und überprüft. Im Theorieteil dieser Arbeit betrachte ich folglich zuerst allgemeine Emotionstheorien, um dann meinen Schwerpunkt auf neuere neurowissenschaftliche E
