Damit reagieren viele Unternehmen auf unternehmensinterne und -externe Entwicklungen, wie dem erhöhten Innovationsdruck, der Ausgliederung vor- und nachgelagerter Produktionsstufen, sowie der Umsetzung eines höheren Grades an Spezialisierung. Im Hinblick auf den erhöhten Innovationsdruck organisieren sich daher zahlreiche Unternehmen vermehrt in Kooperation, um Ressourcen außerhalb der eigenen Organisation zu erschließen bzw. aufzubauen und somit schließlich die eigene Wettbewerbsfähigkeit zu steigern. Die auf diese Weise entstandenen Innovationsnetzwerke, die spätestens seit den 1980er Jahren in den Fokus der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion gerückt sind, entziehen sich damit dem gängigen Verständnis des am Markt herrschenden Preiswettbewerbs und der hierarchischen Autorität. Die Möglichkeiten, die sich im Rahmen einer solchen Zusammenarbeit von Unternehmen in Innovationsnetzwerken eröffnen, sind ebenso vielfältig wie komplex und wurden bereits in ausgewählten empirischen Studien hinsichtlich ihrer Verbreitung und Relevanz für die moderne Wirtschaft analysiert. Ein wesentliches Element, das in diesem Zusammenhang oftmals vernachlässigt wurde, stellt die Untersuchung der Erfolgsfaktoren beim Aufbau und Management von Innovationsnetzwerken dar. In der Praxis gehen viele Unternehmen wirtschaftliche Kooperationsbeziehungen ein, ohne zu wissen welche Faktoren hinsichtlich der Vorbereitung und der Unterhaltung von Netzwerkbeziehungen zu berücksichtigen sind.
