In Zeiten der immer größer werdenden Popularität des Internets, hat sich neben der klassischen Personalbeschaffung (auch: Print Recruiting) die virtuelle Personalbeschaffung (auch: E-Recruiting) als moderne Form der Personalbeschaffung entwickelt. Online Stellen auszuschreiben oder sich online zu bewerben, ist für viele Unternehmen und Bewerber zur Normalität geworden. Für die meisten Recruiter stellt sich nicht mehr die Frage, ob sie für die Beschaffung von attraktiven und hochqualifizierten Nachwuchskräften das Internet überhaupt einsetzen. Vielmehr geht es darum, je nach Recruitingzielgruppe die ideale Mischung aus den unterschiedlichen zur Verfügung stehenden Instrumenten sowohl der klassischen Personalbeschaffung als auch des E-Recruitings zu finden. Wie in vielen anderen Bereichen (z. B. Wertpapierhandel, Pharmaindustrie, Musikbranche), gelten die USA auch beim E-Recruiting als Vorreiter, weshalb viele Begriffe aus dem englischen in den deutschen Sprachgebrauch übernommen worden sind. Im Gegensatz zu den USA hat sich in Europa das E-Recruiting noch nicht vollständig etabliert, befindet sich jedoch in der ununterbrochenen Weiterentwicklung. Aus diesem Grund haben die hier genannten Zahlen und Daten nur vorübergehende Gültigkeit und können bei Abgabe der Arbeit bereits veraltet sein.
