Envejecer aprendiendo aborda uno de los fenómenos actuales más significativos de la vida sociocultural: el aprendizaje de los adultos mayores. Luego de tres décadas de institucionalización de diferentes dispositivos de educación no formal orientados a la población de mayor edad, las actuales generaciones de adultos mayores han incorporado a su estilo de vida un conjunto de actividades de naturaleza diversa (recreación, educación, voluntariado, participación ciudadana, etc.) que tienen como denominador común su condición de promover, demandar y sostener nuevos aprendizajes. ¿Pero qué significa aprender en las edades avanzadas de la vida? ¿Cuál es el valor que los adultos mayores le otorgan al aprendizaje en este momento del curso de la vida? ¿Qué función tiene el aprendizaje como proceso de adaptación a los cambios que impone y propone el envejecimiento? El texto propone algunas respuestas a estos interrogantes basándose en contribuciones teóricas y trabajos elaborados por los autores en el marco de sus actividades como cientistas sociales. Los autores desplazan el foco de su indagación desde la Educación de Adultos Mayores como práctica efectivizada en distintos dispositivos y agencias sociales, hacia el Aprendizaje situado en las coordenadas de la vejez. A partir de las nociones de Aprendizaje a lo largo de la vida y de Envejecimiento Activo, reflexionan sobre las interacciones entre la tríada Educación, Aprendizaje y Envejecimiento Activo.

A la luz de sus intervenciones en el campo gerontológico y psicogerontológico, recuperan los significados y sentidos que ofrecen los discursos de los adultos mayores sobre el aprendizaje, para darle un contenido contextualizado a esas nociones generalmente abstractas. El texto permite revalorizar el aprendizaje como una de las principales capacidades adaptativas de la especie y como una actividad compleja a través de la cual se despliega el proceso de humanización, continúa la complejización psíquica y se resignifica la identidad personal y social de los adultos mayores. Aprender en las edades avanzadas de la vida representa una experiencia subjetiva de enriquecimiento y revitalización que permite afrontar las vicisitudes del envejecer y promueve la pertenencia e inclusión en redes sociales en las que circulan imaginarios renovados y esperanzadores sobre las potencialidades de la vejez.
