Bei der Vermittlung, Beurteilung und Forderung von Kompetenzen der Erkenntnisgewinnung kommt der selbstandigen Durchfuhrung von naturwissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen eine besondere Rolle zu. Lernstand und Lernerfolg in diesem Kompetenzbereich werden jedoch in Leistungstests, Vergleichs- und Klassenarbeiten vorrangig uber schriftliche Aufgaben erhoben. Der Frage, welchen Beitrag ein anwendungsbezogenes Aufgabendesign fur die Diagnose von wissenschaftsmethodischen Kompetenzen leistet, soll in der vorliegenden Studie nachgegangen werden. Das zentrale Forschungsziel beinhaltet die Identifikation und Beschreibung von jenen praktischen Fahigkeiten, die zur Durchfuhrung eines Experimentes benotigt werden. Zu diesem Zweck wurden beim Experimentieren von Schulergruppen des 7. und 9. Jahrganges die Handlungen im Einzelnen und Handlungsprozesse im Ganzen audiovisuell dokumentiert. Im Rahmen einer inhaltsanalytischen Auswertung konnte ein Beurteilungsinstrument zum Experimentierprozess generiert und hinsichtlich der Zuverlassigkeit uberpruft werden. Es bietet Bezugspunkte fur eine handlungsbezogene Diagnose von Schulerleistung und inhaltliche Erklarungsansatze zur Differenz zwischen praktischer und schriftlicher Leistung. Weiterfuhrend konnten uber quantifizierende inhaltsanalytische Techniken drei Typen von Handlungsverlaufen im Erkenntnisprozess identifiziert werden. Der Einsatz von Experimentieraufgaben nach dem hier entwickelten Aufgabendesign bildet auf der Ebene der formativen und summativen Diagnose eine Erganzung zu den traditionellen schriftlichen Aufgaben.
