Seit Millionen von Jahren erzeugt die Natur nanostrukturierte Materialien und Nanocomposites mit bemerkenswerten Eigenschaften. Erst in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten hat die Wissenschaft gelernt, solche Werkstoffe fur unterschiedliche Anwendungen synthetisch herzustellen. Die einzigartigen Eigenschaften und die Leistungsfahigkeit der Nanomaterialien liegen begrundet in den Abmessungen des submikroskopischen Gefuges, der Struktur der Oberflachen beziehungsweise Phasengrenzflachen sowie in der Art und Intensitat der Wechselwirkungen zwischen den Werkstoffkomponenten. Kommerzielle Produkte sind inzwischen beispielsweise aus der Halbleiter-, Oberflachen- und Katalysatortechnik sowie aus der Optik und Biomedizin hervorgegangen. Die spezifischen Gebrauchseigenschaften dieser Produkte haben am Ende des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts sowohl in der Forschung als auch in der Offentlichkeit zu einem explosionsartigen Interesse an den Nanotechnologien gefuhrt. Seit dieser Zeit sind Begriffe wie der glq Lotusbluten-Effekt grq, die Fullerene und die Kohlenstoff-Nanorohrchen in aller Munde. Die Nanotechnologie gilt heute als eine der bedeutendsten Triebfedern fur Werk- und Effektstoffinnovationen in der Zukunft. Auch auf dem Sektor der polymeren Werkstoffe haben Nanocomposites in der jungeren Vergangenheit aufgrund ihrer einzigartigen Eigenschaftsprofile wiederholt Aufsehen erregt. In Kunststoffen auf molekularer Ebene eingebettete Nanobausteine konnen bereits in ausserst geringen Mengen signifikante Veranderungen des Eigenschaftsprofils bewirken. Die Ausnutzung submikroskopischer physikalischer Effekte eroffnet vielfaltige Moglichkeiten, die Eigenschaftsprofile etablierter Materialien zu diversifizieren und fur neue Anwendungen masszuschneidern. Im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Abhandlung steht die Entwicklung von Polypropylen-Nanocomposites auf der Basis organisch modifizierter Schichtsilikate. Die besondere Herausforderung besteht dabei in der ausgesprochen schlechten thermodynamischen Vertraglichkeit der Werkstoffkomponenten, die auf ihre unterschiedlichen Polaritaten zuruckzufuhren ist. Daraus resultiert die Notwendigkeit, zusatzliche Compatibilizer einzusetzen, die die Grenzflachenspannung zwischen dem Polypropylen und den Silikatpartikeln reduzieren und somit ihre Wechselwirkungen intensivieren. Die Compatibilizer bestimmen daher entscheidend die Morphologie der Verbundwerkstoffe und sind ausschlaggebend fur deren Eigenschaftsprofil. Im Rahmen der Dissertation wurden innovative Ansatze zur Kompatibilisierung von Polypropylen-Nanocomposites untersucht. Dazu wurden unterschiedliche Typen von Pfropfcopolymeren mittels Reaktivextrusion generiert und als Compatibilizer in Nanocomposites eingesetzt. Die entwickelten Rezepturen und Prozesskenngrossen wurden in Bezug auf die Reaktionsausbeute sowie hinsichtlich der resultierenden Produkteigenschaften optimiert. Dabei wurden die Funktionalzusammenhange zwischen den chemischen Merkmalen der Compatibilizer und den mechanischen, thermischen und rheologischen Eigenschaften der generierten Nanocomposites sowie der Gute der Partikeldispergierung charakterisiert.
