Aufgrund der begrenzten natürlichen Rohstoffe und den zukünftigen Auflagen an den globalen Klimaschutz wird die sparsame Anwendung von den Ressourcen und gleichzeitige Reduktion von Treibhausgasen immer wichtiger. Einen wesentlichen Beitrag muss hier der Automobilbau leisten, weil durch die Herabsenkung des Kraftstoffverbrauchs sowohl die Rohstoffe eingespart als auch die CO2-Emissionen reduziert werden können. Eine bedeutende Maßnahme zur Senkung des Kraftstoffverbrauchs bei PKW ist die Reduzierung des Fahrzeuggewichts. Wird das Gewicht eines Fahrzeugs um beispielsweise 100 kg verringert, so ergibt sich eine Kraftstoffeinsparung von etwa 0,3l auf 100 km. Daher wird der Leichtbau im Automobil, neben der Optimierung der Verbrennungsprozesse und aerodynamischer Eigenschaften, einen erheblichen Stellenwert erhalten. Im Dezember 2008 einigten sich Rat und Parlament auf eine Verordnung zur Minderung der CO2-Emissionen bei neuen PKW. Am 23. April 2009 wurde die Verordnung auch formell verabschiedet, die somit einen verbindlichen Rechtsrahmen schafft und der Automobilindustrie Planungssicherheit gibt. Besonders wichtig ist es, dass bis zum Jahre 2020 der CO2-Ausstoß auf durchschnittlich 95 g/km gesenkt werden soll. Dies entspricht einem Verbrauch von 3,6 Liter beim Diesel- und 4,2 Liter beim Ottomotor auf 100 km Entfernung. Ein aktueller Trend im modernen Fahrzeugbau, der auf der Verordnung zur Reduktion von Kohlenstoffdioxid- und Schadstoffemissionen basiert, führt zum Leichtbau. Langfristiges Ziel des Leichtbaus ist es, durch die optimierten Komponenten wie Träger, Platten, Schalen und Koppelelemente, die Leistungsgewichtsrelationen von Fahrzeugen nachhaltig zu verbessern. Damit wird ermöglicht, erhebliche Potentiale hinsichtlich der Energieeinsparung und Optimierung des Wirkungsgrades zu erreichen.
