Jahrhunderte haben sich mit Aufstellung von Kunstgesetzen gequalt, und selbst die Richtigkeit der Erkenntnisse forderte kaum die praktische Asthetik, gab nicht den Halt vor schlimmen Versuchungen, nicht den hellen Trieb, das Heiligtum zu verehren. Die Gesetze, auch die richtig erkannten, halfen nicht. Lief;en sie sich in eine knappe allgemeingultige Form fassen, so gehorte zur Schopfung kein Genie. Sie sind so weitmaschig, dass jeder Versuch, auf rein gesetzmaigem Wege zur Kunstschatzung oder Schopfung zu gelangen, uns stets der Gefahr aussetzt, durch die Maschen zu fallen. Man kann der Kunst nur durch vergleichende Betrachtung personlich naher kommen. Wie dieser oder jener das Gesetz erfullte, wie ein anderer auf anderem Wege mit einem Opfer, einer Zutat dem Ziele naher kam, und wie dann wieder der Nachfolger das erste mit dem zweiten zu einem dritten bildete, diese Beobachtung ubt uns auf die Kunst ein, soweit uberhaupt eine Wissenschaft vermag, den Sinn des Kunstgenusses zu fordern.

Ueber die Kunst lat sich mit Abstrakten wenig sagen. Was nicht Kunst ist, erscheint selbstverstandlich, und doch haben sich Generationen bei uns und uberall darum gezankt. Man hat Helden auf dem Thron behalten, nur weil man sie vor dem Vergleiche schutzte, und man hat andere der Vergessenheit der Gegenwart preisgegeben, weil man sich straubte, an ihnen die mutige Tat notwendiger Entwicklung zu erkennen. Unendliche Widerspruche verwirrten die Lage des Kunstfreundes unserer Zeit. Neben den Zaghaften entstanden Unabhangige, die einem Kunstler um so lieber folgten, je weniger Beziehungen zu der Kunst der Mit welt oder der Vergangenheit an ihm bemerkbar waren. Diese Neuerungsschwarmer die in der Kunst die Entwicklungsgeschichte leugnen, sind fast noch schlimmere Feinde der Asthetik als die Misstrauischen.
