Für Hobbes war Vertrauen ein wesentlicher Faktor, damit eine Gesellschaft funktioniert. Hume befasste sich mit interessengeleitetem Vertrauen und Smith griff diese Ausführungen auf und erweiterte sie. Dennoch wurde Vertrauen im ökonomischen Zusammenhang lange Zeit nicht detaillierter untersucht. Deutsch setzte sich 1958 mit dem Thema auseinander und sieht Vertrauen als den zentralen Schlüssel zum Verständnis der Persönlichkeitsentwicklung. 1974 definierte Fox die "High-Trust-Culture" als einen Wettbewerbsvorteil. Der Ökonom Arrow griff Vertrauen Ende der 1970er Jahre auf und beschreibt Vertrauen als eine wichtige Komponente für alltägliche Interaktionssituationen und als Schmiermittel für wirtschaftliche Transaktionen. Zand beschreibt es als eine wichtige Komponente bei der Problemlösung in Gruppenarbeiten. Seit Anfang der 1980er Jahre wird Vertrauen in Unternehmen in der Organisationstheorie als Produktions- und Produktivfaktor angesehen. Der amerikanische Soziologe Coleman geht Anfang der 1990er Jahre ausführlich auf den Aspekt Vertrauen ein. Dieser Ansatz ist als "Rational-Choice" bekannt geworden und besagt, dass die Entscheidung zum Vertrauen auf einem kalkulierten Risiko des Vertrauensgebers fußt, also einer bewussten Entscheidung unter Abwägung der Risiken. Seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre widmeten sich eine größer werdende Anzahl von Wirtschaftswissenschaftlern dem Thema. Vertrauen ist nur einer von vielen Faktoren für erfolgreiche Führung, wird aber als ein zentraler und schwer zu imitierender Wettbewerbsvorteil angesehen.
