La psicoterapia autógena es un tratamiento psicológico de orientación psicofisiológica, cuya acción se ejerce mediante la activación de procesos naturales de autorregulación y de neutralización de experiencias traumáticas. Sus orígenes se remontan a los estudios del fisiólogo alemán Oskar Vogt sobre el sueño y la hipnosis a finales del siglo XIX. En 1930, otro médico alemán, Johannes Heinrich Schultz, perfeccionó la técnica y creó el Entrenamiento Autógeno (Autogenic Training). Desde entonces, la psicoterapia autógena se viene desarrollando por aposición progresiva de nuevos métodos y técnicas, que aplican sus principios científicos básicos a la clínica psicosomática y psicoterapéutica. Los ejercicios básicos del entrenamiento autógeno inducen un estado especial de conciencia, que se acompaña de sentimientos de serenidad y de aumento de la amplitud mental. Su práctica regular mejora el equilibrio neurovegetativo, la resiliencia y la creatividad, por lo que, además de sus aplicaciones clínicas, tiene interés para estudiantes, deportistas, artistas y, en general, para todo aquel que quiera desarrollar su potencialidades. En la actualidad, se considera una de las principales terapias por inducción de estados ampliados de conciencia, junto con el yoga, el mindfulness y otras técnicas de meditación de origen oriental, de las que difiere por ser sus orígenes clínicos, en lugar de religiosos. Además de un procedimiento eficaz para la reducción del estrés, los métodos autógenos están especialmente indicados en el tratamiento de trastornos psicosomáticos y de ansiedad, el trastorno de estrés posttraumático, cuadros depresivos relacionados con experiencias de duelo y trastornos severos de la personalidad. Sus aplicaciones extraclínicas incluyen el tratamiento preventivo de las tensiones de la vida cotidiana, el estrés laboral y el aumento de la productividad, los deportes de competición y la preparación para situaciones extremas, como el entrenamiento de astronautas.
About the Author: Luis de Rivera (nombre completo: Jose Luis González de Rivera y Revuelta) es Doctor en Medicina por la Universidad de Navarra, Especialista en Psiquiatría y Psicoterapia por la Universidad McGill de Montreal y Psicoanalista Certificado por la American Academy of Psychoanalysis de New York y por el Instituto de Psicoanálisis de Madrid. Fue colaborador directo de Wolfgang Luthe, discípulo directo de JH Schultz, a quien sucedió en la presidencia de The International Committee for the Coordination of Clinical Application and Teaching of Autogenic Therapy (ICAT). Es también president de The International Society of Autogenic Training and Psychotherapy (ISATAP) Durante su estancia en Canadá fundó la Unidad Psicosomática del Montreal General Hospital y fue Profesor Asociado de Psiquiatría en la McGill University y Full Professor of Psychiatry en McMaster University, de Hamilton, Ontario. También se formó con Habib Davanloo y con Peter Sifneos en Psicoterapia Dinámica Breve "Short Term Dynamic Anxiety Provoking Psychotherapy" y fue instructor de esta técnica en los primeros cursos impartidos en Montreal y en San Francisco. Ha sido Catedrático de Psiquiatría y Psicología Medica en la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, en la Universidad de La Laguna en Canarias y en la McMaster University de Canadá. Ha sido Jefe Adjunto de Psiquiatría en la Clínica Puerta de Hierro de Madrid y Jefe del Servicio de Psiquiatría en el Hamilton General Hospital, el Hospital Universitario de Canarias y la Fundación Jiménez-Díaz de Madrid. En la actualidad dirige el Instituto de Psicoterapia e Investigación Psicosomática de Madrid. El Prof. Luis de Rivera es Académico Numerario de la Academia Médico-Quirúrgica Española y "Fellow" del Royal College of Physicians de Canadá y de la American Academy of Psychoanalysis. Habla fluidamente español, inglés, francés e italiano e imparte con frecuencia conferencias y cursos en esas lenguas. Es autor de más de 300 artículos científicos y 15 libros, entre ellos, Síndromes de Estrés, Crisis Emocionales, Medicina Psicosomática, El Maltrato Psicológico, Listado Breve de Síntomas - LSB-50, Cuestionario de Estrategias de Acoso - LIPT 60, Las Claves del Mobbing y Psychodynamics of Mobbing.
