Enrique IV Este drama histórico en verso y prosa de William Shakespeare consta de dos partes de cinco actos cada una; dichas partes fueron representadas en 1597-98 y publicadas respectivamente en 1598 y 1600. El drama se basa en la Crónica de Holinshed y, para las partes cómicas, Oldcastle y Falstaff, en un drama preexistente, Las famosas victorias de Enrique V. La primera parte trata de la rebelión de los Percy, ayudados por Douglas, con el concurso de Mortimer y de Glendower, y de su derrota por obra del rey y del príncipe de Gales en Shrewsbury (1403). El Príncipe de Gales se asocia con Oldcastle (luego sustituido con el nombre de Falstaff) y sus compañeros Pointz, Bardolp y Peto en su vida desenfrenada. Pointz y el príncipe hacen que los demás asalten a algunos viajeros en Gadshill y les roben, y sean a su vez robados por ellos. Falstaff, para justificar la pérdida del botín, pretende haber sido asaltado por cien pícaros; luego va reduciendo paulatinamente el número de los agresores, hasta que el Príncipe le explica cómo han ido las cosas y entonces Falstaff confiesa que no ha reaccionado porque nunca podría matar al heredero del trono. La parte seria del drama está formada por el contraste entre los dos jóvenes héroes, el príncipe Enrique y Percy Hotspur. Enrique está adornado de las cualidades más seductoras: sus más locas extravagancias parecen sólo rasgos maliciosos en los que estalla su espíritu activo, a su pesar obligado al ocio, hasta que, apenas se ofrece ocasión, despliega toda su fiereza caballeresca. El valor de Hotspur es en cambio una mezcla de rudeza, de orgullo y de obstinación pueril; pero su impetuoso ardor redime sus defectos, hasta que cae en la batalla de Shrewsbury. Falstaff, verdadero "miles gloriosus," encuentra su cuerpo en el campo y se jacta de haberle matado. La segunda parte tiene por argumento la rebelión del arzobispo Scroop, de Mowbray y de Hastings, mientras en la trama cómica continúan las gestas de Falstaff, con las del príncipe, del fanfarrón Pistol, de Pointz, de la señora Quickly, de Doll Tearsheet (o Rompesábanas, como traduciríamos en castellano). Falstaff, llamado para reprimir la rebelión, durante la recluta cae sobre los jueces Shallow y Silence, se fija en ellos, y roba mil libras al primero. (En la caricatura de Shallow se ha querido advertir una alusión a sir Thomas Lucy, con quien Shakespeare había tenido que ver por haber robado cuando joven un gamo en sus tierras; según otros, se trataría de una alusión al juez Gardiner). A la muerte de Enrique IV, Falstaff piensa que la ascensión del príncipe al trono constituirá su fortuna: pero el nuevo rey lo arroja de su presencia y lo mete en la cárcel. Mientras la trama heroica del drama languidece después de la muerte de Hotspur, la trama cómica (gesta de Falstaff y sus compañeros hasta la catástrofe y el repudio, por parte de Enrique V, de los compañeros de sus fechorías juveniles) mantiene vivo su interés de un extremo a otro, y constituye la obra maestra cómica de Shakespeare, bastante superior a la farsa de Las alegres comadres de Windsor por el brío de los hallazgos y el gusto rabelaisiano de las frases grotescas.
