About the Book

Engineering Chemistry is exclusively designed for the first-year engineering undergraduate students of Uttarakhand Technical University (UTU). This book aims to impart to students an in-depth knowledge of various aspects of chemistry as applied to engineering. This textbook contains 10 chapters covering all the disciplines of Engineering Chemistry and deals with various branches of chemistry - physical, inorganic, organic, and analytical - and extends the application of concepts to organic reaction mechanisms, stereo chemistry, etc. Other topics covered include chemical kinetics, electrochemistry, water and its treatment, fuels and combustion, and chemical and instrumental methods of analyses.

About the Author

Dr. Chinnappan Baskar is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at THDC Institute of Hydropower Engineering and Technology, Dehradun. He has an M.Sc. in Chemistry from IIT Madras and a PhD in from NUS, Singapore. He has been the HOD of Chemistry at Lovely Professional University (LPU) from 2006-2009, and has been Director (Academic Affairs) at Dev Bhoomi Group of Institutions, Dehradun. Dr. Baskar’s research interests include synthetic organic chemistry, conducting polymers, green chemistry, production of biofuels and fine chemicals from biomass, ionic liquids, and membrane separation. He has published several research papers in reputed international journals and conference proceedings. He is the Editor of Biomass Conversion: The Interface of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Materials Science (Springer-Verlag, 2012). Dr. Shikha Baskar obtained her PhD in Organic Chemistry from the Department of Biochemistry and Chemistry, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab. She is currently the Visiting Faculty of Chemistry at THDC Institute of Hydropower Engineering and Technology, Uttarakhand. Her current research interests are in the areas of synthetic organic chemistry, green chemistry, ionic liquids, and production of biofuels. Dr. Ranjit S. Dhillon is a retired Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana. Dr. Dhillon has supervised 12 PhD students and 20 M.Sc. students in the areas of chemoselective green methodologies, natural products and their bioactive studies, and synthesis of eco-friendly agrochemicals. His research work carried out at PAU was cited by Nobel Laureate Late Prof. Herbert C. Brown. Prof Dhillon has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers. He is the author of Hydroboration and Organic Synthesis (Springer-Verlag, 2007).
