About the Book

English summary: Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716) is one of the more notable and discussed personalities in the history of science and travel. Quite legendary and highly praised for his exploits, he is best known, even today, for the now three-hundred year old work, the "Amoenitates Exoticae," first published in Lemgo in 1712. Because Kaempfer wanted to make his Asiatic research trip known to the scientific community through the "Amoenitates," he published essays in this work on cultural and natural phenomenon that were wholly new to his European contemporaries. They were, despite the growing trend to publish in German, offered in stylish Latin, which was done so well, that a complete and updated translation of the work has not been necessary, although this has noticeably hindered the scientific reception of work. The anniversary of the "Amoenitates" and the development of an electronic edition serve as the occasions to subject the work itself to more exacting analysis and also to study Kaempfer's position in the scholarship at the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. The following subjects are included in this volume: the printing of the "Amoenitates," their electronic edition and their position within the field of modern electronic editions, Kaempfer's strategy as an author and the contemporary reception of the book. Neo-Latin as a language of science and the "Amoenitates" as a storehouse of knowledge are highlighted in this collection of essays about the interest in China in the 17th century, knowledge about the Orient and Russia shortly after 1700, the expansion of the botanical treasury as well as the development of collections of art and items of wonder and curiosity.
