Né à l'Ile Maurice en 1950, j'arrive à Paris en 1971, trois ans après les événements de mai 1968 et un an après la mort du Général de Gaulle. Georges Pompidou est alors Président de la République. Nous sommes à la fin des "Trente Glorieuses ". L'économie française se porte bien avec une forte croissance industrielle d'environ 5% par an, une expansion démographique et une situation de plein emploi. La France crée l'avion supersonique Concorde, construit des autoroutes et développe l'énergie nucléaire. Valéry Giscard d'Estaing est Ministre des Finances. François Mitterand, socialiste et chef de l'opposition, a soif de pouvoir.Le contexte international est marqué par une forte augmentation du prix du pétrole, des soubresauts dans le système monétaire, l'affaire du Watergate aux Etats Unis, la guerre du Vietnam et la poursuite de la Guerre Froide.Dès mon inscription en septembre 1971, je comprends que j'ai fait le bon choix. Les études me passionnent, je découvre Paris et une nouvelle vie. Ce seront quatre années fabuleuses jusqu'à l'obtention du diplôme en juin 1975. Elles me laissent de bons souvenirs et j'ai voulu les partager avec vous. Le livre décrit l'ambiance de la rue Saint Guillaume où se trouve Sciences Po, le programme d'études, le plaisir de suivre des cours donnés par des professeurs brillants, mais aussi la difficulté des études et l'angoisse à l'approche des examens.Le livre aborde aussi le défi pour un Mauricien venant d'une petite île tropicale et paisible de s'adapter à une nouvelle vie dans une grande capitale au rythme de vie accéléré et soutenu. Très vite arrivera le choc de l'hiver avec le froid, les journées sombres, la tristesse causée par l'éloignement de la famille et la nostalgie de notre île natale, des eaux chaudes de l'Océan Indien, du ciel bleu, et de la simplicité de la vie.J'ai eu la chance de vivre à Paris, une ville extraordinairement belle, riche en histoire, en culture et en spectacles. En plaisirs simples aussi: marcher dans le Quartier Latin, regarder couler la Seine, s'asseoir sur un banc dans un parc... lorsque nous trouvions le temps. Tout cela reste inoubliable. Si la plupart de l'action se déroule à Paris, j'ai aussi eu la chance de faire deux grands voyages en Europe pendant les vacances. Cela m'a permis de connaître d'autres cultures et a développé le désir de faire un jour d'autres voyages dans d'autres continents et découvrir d'autres modes de vie.
