About the Book

After World War II, ambitious programmes to produce electricity from nuclear energy were begun, in the search for a return on the enormous amounts of money invested. The economic expansion in the West during the fiffties and sixties was directly related to enormous petrol consumption at a time when energy was considered plentiful and cheap. Energy consumption during these decades grew more than exponentially. The fastest developing industrial sectors were precisely the ones that consumed most energy-petro-chemical industries, metallurgy, car manufacturing, domestic appliances, electricity generating, etc.- and a trend developed towards gods and services with higher energy intensity. Since 1950, increased energy production has been systematically favoured over more rational use. So much so that the increase in energy consumption has been taken as a reliable indicator of progress.
