About the Author

James Tanton, Ph.D., earned a degree in mathematics from Princeton University in 1994. He pursued his interests in education, as well as an active research program, while working at New College of the University of South Florida, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, and Merrimack College. He is currently the founding director of the St. Mark’s Institute of Mathematics, a newly established organization designed to promote mathematics and the enjoyment of its pursuit at all levels. He is also a frequent contributor to Math Horizons, an undergraduate national mathematics periodical distributed by the Mathematical Association of America.
