The 98th swung into action on the morning of September 11, 2001 and continued its service with the pivotal yearlong mission to train Iraqi soldiers in 2004, the first institutional training division to deploy overseas and to establish standards for subsequent Reserve units in the training of a foreign army. At the same time, the Division fielded a detachment of soldiers to Afghanistan to assist with the training of cadets for that country's National Military Academy.
Originally conceived as a combat division to bolster the American contingent in WWI, the 98th Division has served in many capacities since its inception--from a component of the Organized Reserve in the early 1920s, to an assault force in training during WWII, to an occupying force in Japan following the Second World War, and finally to a training division in the U.S. Army Reserve. Culled primarily from the northeastern United States, members of the 98th have stood ready to serve their nation, in peace and war, for nearly ninety years.
The 98th Division (IT)'s involvement in the Global War on Terrorism commenced immediately after the September 11, 2001 attacks on America, as some of the 98th's soldiers were in the vicinity of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Others were first responders or aided in rescue and recovery efforts. The Global War on Terrorism is America's first protracted war fought exclusively by an all-volunteer force. The Army Reserve is an integral part of this war effort and has transitioned from a strategic reserve to an operational reserve. Inherent in our capability is the individual training of soldiers. As a result, the 98th Division was tasked to develop the means to export its expertise overseas.
This book is but a brief chapter in the Global War on Terrorism and a glimpse of the contributions of the 98th's valiant Iroquois Warriors during operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
An Encounter with History provides a panoramic view of soldiers in combat theaters and of their families on the home front. It also includes various perspectives on the war as voiced by the Division's soldiers, their spouses, and their children. The final chapter focuses on sacrifice, and particularly on the lives of the five soldiers from the 98th killed in action.
