Empfänger vermißt ist eine ergreifende Liebesgeschichte aus dem zweiten Weltkrieg, zusammengetragen im Jahr 1989 aus Erinnerungen, Briefen und Tagebuchaufzeichnungen. Nach einer Schilderung der Verhältnisse der geborgenen Kindheit als sechstes von zwölf Geschwistern auf dem Herrenbauernhof ihres strengen Vaters und der schicksalsergebenen Mutter wendet sich die Autorin der Jugendzeit zu. Die Liebesgeschichte beginnt mit einer inszenierten Verwechslungskomödie wie im Heimatfilm, in deren Aufführung Luise sich in den jungen Leutnant Hans verliebt, der eigentlich für ihre Freundin eingefangen werden sollte. Von da an verfolgen wir Schritt für Schritt aus beiden Perspektiven, der des Leutnants an der Front in Rußland und der der Pharmaziestudentin in Wien, mit, wie aus einem koketten Spiel die brennende, trotzige Beschwörung des Traums von der großen Liebe wird, die über das Schicksal zu triumphieren sucht und doch am Ende der bittersten Niederlage nicht entgeht. Erst viel später entsteht die Erkenntnis der Verblendung, die zur Selbstaufopferung einer ganzen Generation für eine Idee führte; und mit der Dankbarkeit dafür, dem Geliebten Beistand in seiner Not gewesen zu sein, kommt es für Luise schließlich zur Aussöhnung mit der Vergangenheit und zu inneren Frieden. Die autobiographische Trilogie "Korngoldleuchten" Der Anblick des Leuchtens der Kornfelder löste für Luise immer wieder in entscheidenden Situationen ihres Lebens eine tiefe Andacht aus und leitete sie zur Ehrfurcht vor dem Göttlichen und zur Erkenntnis, "daß das, was wir Leben nennen auf dieser Welt, ein immerwährend sich wiederholendes Säen, Wachsen, Werden, Ernten und Vergehen ist." Rückkehr des Vermißten und letztlich die persönliche Desillusionierung wie auch die allgemeine bezüglich der Ideale des Nationalsozialismus sind die Themen des Schlußkapitels. Der Epilog spricht im Gedenken des Todes von der Aussöhnung mit dem Schicksal, von der Dankbarkeit dafür, geliebt zu haben, von der Vergänglichkeit
