Emile Edde, un nom, un homme, une figure politique que l'on retrouve pendant pres de quarante ans a toutes les etapes de la creation de la Republique libanaise et pourtant tellement meconnu. Pourquoi Emile Edde a-t-il ete eradique de l'histoire de son pays alors qu'il en a ete l'un des acteurs principaux et pere fondateur de la Republique ? Certes, Emile Edde avait sa conception du Liban et de ses institutions. Celle-ci ne pouvant aboutir, il decide alors de defendre l'independance, la souverainete et l'integrite territoriale, telles que fixees par les autorites mandataires. Le principal reproche qui lui sera fait est ce lien fort avec la France. Il a toujours voulu que cette Grande Puissance represente les garanties de viabilite et d'independance pour le Liban. President en 1936, Emile Edde pensera y parvenir avec le Traite d'Amitie et d'Alliance franco-libanais; ce Traite ne sera jamais ratifie par la France. En politique interieure, sa rivalite avec Bechara al-Khoury est devenue legendaire, tout comme son amitie avec Riyad al-Sulh, avant que ce dernier devienne president du Conseil. Emile Edde a profondement reforme les institutions libanaises et defendu la Constitution par rapport aux exigences des Hauts Commissaires pendant ses presidences du Conseil, en 1929, et de la Republique, en 1936. Alors pourquoi en novembre 1943, en pleine crise d'independance, Emile Edde, accepte-t-il d'etre nomme a la tete de l'Etat, par les autorites mandataires ? Nous en verrons les raisons. Cette crise durera dix jours et sonnera le glas de sa carriere sur l'avant-scene politique libanaise. Demis de ses prerogatives parlementaires, Emile Edde echappera de justesse a une Cour de Justice speciale pour le juger et le condamner pour haute trahison, lors de ce coup d'etat blanc des autorites francaises. Il cree, par la suite, le Bloc National, nouveau parti politique par le biais duquel il tentera d'organiser une veritable opposition au regime impose par le president de la Republique, Bechara al-Khoury, son grand ennemi de toujours. Apres les elections falsifiees de 1947, l'opposition se renforce encore. Sur le point d'arriver a un accord avec les autres partis d'opposition, il meurt soudainement d'une crise de tachycardie, le 27 septembre 1949. Des funerailles nationales lui ayant ete refusees par Bechara al-Khoury, la population libanaise fit de son enterrement un plebiscite national contre la politique du President et du gouvernement en place. Ce 1er volume restitue les contextes geographique et historique avant la naissance d'Emile Edde et se poursuit par son evolution politique depuis 1916 jusqu'a son accession a la presidence de la Republique en 1936. Michel Van Leeuw est ne en Belgique en 1956. Il a enseigne a San Francisco (1980-1983) et a Beyrouth (1983-1986). Il obtient sa Maitrise en Histoire en 1986 et son D.E.A. en Relations Internationales l'annee suivante a L'Universite de Haute Bretagne-Rennes II. Il entame alors sa these de Doctorat et participe a de nombreux colloques. Il a aussi ete invite dans le cadre d'un Visiting Fellowship, par le Center for Lebanese Studies et le Saint Anthony's College, a Oxford. Il interrompt ses recherches pour raisons professionnelles. En 2000 et 2001, il reprend ses recherches et acheve sa these de Doctorat en Relations Internationales (section Moyen-Orient ? Liban) sous la direction du Professeur Jacques Thobie, a l'Universite de Paris 8 Vincennes a Saint Denis, these qui recevra les felicitations du Jury.
