James Wait, és un mort marí negre de l'Índia Occidental a bord del vaixell mercant Narcissus, on es troba el pas de Bombai a Londres. En patir tuberculosi, Wait es posa greument malalt des del primer moment, despertant la sospita de bona part de la tripulació, tot i que la seva ostensible difícil desperta moltes simpaties humanitàries. El capità del vaixell, el capità Allistoun, i un vell mariner anomenat Singleton es mantenen preocupats principalment per les seves funcions i semblen indiferents a l'estat de Wait. Arrodonint el Cap de Bona Esperança, el vaixell es captura sobre els seus extrems durant un cop fort i la meitat del casc es submergeix, amb moltes de les racions de la tripulació i objectes personals perduts; els homes s'aferren a la coberta durant tota la nit i el dia, esperant en silenci que el vaixell giri la resta del camí i s'enfonsés. Allistoun es nega a deixar que els pals es tallin, cosa que podria permetre que el casc marit cap a la dreta, però impediria que la nau utilitzés les seves veles. Cinc dels homes, adonant-se que Wait no té compte, es van enfilar cap a la seva cabina i el van rescatar al seu propi perill. Molts d'altres ja havien sospitós d'ell i el capità Allistoun revela la desfilada de Wait davant tota la tripulació. Wait afirma que se sent prou bé per treballar, però el capità ordena que es resti a la previsió per a la resta del viatge, una decisió que polaritza ràpidament bona part de la tripulació entre els partidaris de Wait i els detractors. Allistoun impedeix un donament gairebé animat per Donkin. Obligat a mantenir-se en dejú, Wait creix cada vegada més fràgil a mesura que el seu estat es deteriora. El vaixell continua a la deriva sense brisa i alguns dels tripulants, inclòs Singleton, comencen a xiuxiuejar que el propi Wait és el responsable, i que només la seva mort provocarà vents favorables.Quan el vaixell passa per les Açores i Wait s'apropa a la mort, Donkin saqueja discretament els objectes personals de Wait del cofre marí. L'espera, finalment, sucumbeix i mor: la primera prova que estava realment malalt. Això es produeix a la vista de la terra, tal com havia previst Singleton, i un fort vent torna immediatament després que el cos de Wait es comprometi amb el mar. El Narcís arriba aviat a Anglaterra.
