En 1908, Enrique Banchs publicó El libro de los elogios, segundo de sus poemarios que Lugones celebró en una nota crítica consagratoria para el joven poeta. Bien podría ser, pues, ese nombre, El libro de los elogios, el que denomine a un volumen colector como éste que reúna las varias piezas en prosa que Lugones destinó a encomiar figuras destacadas de la patria y de la humanidad.En ese plan deberían ser incluidos libros, folletos y ensayos dispersos. Contendría, idealmente, los tres libros, el último inconcluso, que el autor dedicó a tres figuras argentinas de distintos ámbitos de acción: Historia de Sarmiento (1911), Elogio de Ameghino (1915) y Roca (1938). Junto a ellos, se ordenarán los trabajos que he recogido en la primera parte de este tomo, precediendo al Elogio de Ameghino. Obviamente, las obras sobre Sarmiento y Roca requieren volúmenes propios.Los elogios breves ocupan un lapso que va desde 1899 a 1937, un año antes de la muerte de Lugones. Ellos son: dos trabajos sobre Rubén Darío, de 1899 y 1916, respectivamente; Emilio Zola (1902); el "Discurso sobre fray Fernando Trejo y Sanabria" (1904); el casi inédito, por desconocido e inhallable, Elogio de Leonardo (disertación de 1919, editada en 1925); un "Panegírico filosófico" (1921) dedicado al general Mitre, ignorado por los críticos y por el mismo diario La Nación, donde entonces se publicara; "Camoens un poeta del amor" (1924); "El Seráfico" (1926) sobre San Francisco de Asís; "La personalidad del general Roca" (1926), preludio de su estudio mayor inacabado, no recogido en el volumen póstumo; el lúcido "Elogio de Maquiavelo" (1927); la "Significación de Goethe" (1932); la ponderación de la obra talentosa de Víctor Hugo en "Barrio de Titán" (1935), y la breve y devotisima semblanza que trazó en "El padre Esquiú" (1937). Esta es la colecta que aquí ofrezco.

Pedro Luis Barcia (Gualeguaychú, Entre Ríos, Argentina, 28 de junio de 1939) es doctor en Letras, lingüista, investigador universitario y profesor argentino.Fue presidente de la Academia Nacional de Educación y de la Academia Argentina de Letras.
