Publicadas originalmente em 1951, em edição especial do bibliófilo José Mindlin, estas traduções das Elegias de Duíno (1912-1922), feitas pela poeta Dora Ferreira da Silva, viriam a se constituir em um patrimônio cultural da poesia alemã no Brasil. Seguindo a tradição de poetas tradutores que se dedicaram às Elegias de Rilke, como Stephen Spender e mais recentemente Edward Snow, Dora Ferreira da Silva soube transpor para o português a atmosfera do desamparo existencial, de uma religiosidade peculiar (Frömmigkeit, piedade, devoção, humildade) e da busca de uma afinidade com a natureza destes que são dez dos poemas mais célebres do século XX. Acompanhadas de comentários tanto biográficos como textuais da tradutora, nesta edição bilíngue, as Elegias podem ser lidas como um testemunho de uma grande crise espiritual pressentida pelo "cidadão da Europa intelectual", como Paul Valéry o chamava. Nas palavras da tradutora: "Eu vi que Rilke era muito mais um poeta do que qualquer outra coisa. Sinceramente, aprendi alemão para ler Rilke. Há um mistério no som das palavras que eu não sei explicar. Ele criou um idioma dentro do alemão. Há expressões de Rilke que o alemão comum não compreende. Meu encontro com Rilke foi uma paixão fulminante. Rilke estava no castelo de Duíno, e um dia sentou-se encostado a uma árvore, e, de repente, sentiu-se num devaneio, ausentou-se de si, e começou a sentir uma circulação entre ele e a árvore, isto é, uma participação mística. A vida e a morte, para ele, estão numa eterna circulação, e ele, talvez por um problema um pouco mórbido, é atraído demasiadamente para a morte. Em uma carta de 1921, a Ilse Blumenthal-Weiss, Rilke nos dá uma chave para estas Elegias: "A religião é algo de infinitamente simples, ingênuo. Não é um saber, um conteúdo sentimental, não é dever nem renúncia, não é uma limitação: mas, sim, na amplitude perfeita do universo, é uma tendência do coração". O autor Rainer Maria Rilke nasceu em 4 de dezembro de 1875, em Praga. Publicou aos 19 anos seu primeiro livro, Vida e canções. De sua viagem à Rússia nasceria a primeira grande obra do autor, O livro das horas, ao qual se seguiram Novos poemas (1907-1908), Elegias de Duíno (1922) e Sonetos a Orfeu (1922). Porém, seu livro mais famoso é Cartas a um jovem poeta. Escritas entre 1903 e 1908, mostram ao aspirante à poesia Franz Xaver Kappus, indeciso entre seguir a carreira militar e a literária, os caminhos do mundo interior do escritor. Morreu em 29 de dezembro de 1926. A tradutora Dora Ferreira da Silva foi poeta, tradutora e editora (revistas Diálogo e Cavalo Azul), teve sua obra coligida no volume Poesia reunida (prêmio ABL, 2000). Sobre ela escreveram diversos críticos e poetas, como Gerardo de Mello Mourão, Eurialo Cannabrava, José Paulo Paes, Cassiano Ricardo, Nogueira Moutinho e Vilém Flusser.
