El tungsteno (Madrid, 1931) es una novela desigual sobre un conflicto en una mina de los Andes. Es una novela "proletaria" que ataca no solamente a los "gringos", sino también a los "arribistas" que imitan a los extranjeros y explotan y oprimen a los pobres, los indios, y los "conscriptos" del ejército. Publicada en España, fue muy popular en la década de 1930, la de la depresión económica mundial.César Vallejo (Santiago de Chuco, 1892 - Paris, 1938). Desde niño conoció la miseria, pero también el calor del hogar, lejos del cual sentía una incurable orfandad. Estudió en la Universidad de Trujillo, ciudad donde recibió el estímulo de "la bohemia" local formada por periodistas, escritores y políticos rebeldes. Entre ellos, figuran Víctor Raúl Haya de la Torre, José Eulogio Garrido, Alcides Spelucín, Macedonio de la Torre, entre otros, integrantes de "Norte", grupo liderado por Antenor Orrego.En Lima apareció su primer libro, Los heraldos negros (1919), uno de los más representativos ejemplos del postmodernismo. En la capital hizo amistad con Manuel Gonzáles Prada y Abraham Valdelomar, e integró el grupo "Colónida", enriqueciendo su visión del mundo a través del contacto con nuevas corrientes europeas.En 1920 hizo una visita a su pueblo natal, donde se vio envuelto en unos disturbios que lo llevarán a la cárcel por unos tres meses. Esta experiencia tuvo permanente influencia en su vida y obra, y se refleja de modo muy directo en varios poemas de su libro, Trilce (1922). En esta obra, Vallejo se aparta de los modelos tradicionales que hasta entonces había seguido, incorporando algunas novedades de la vanguardia y realizando una angustiosa y desconcertante inmersión en los abismos de la condición humana que nunca antes habían sido explorados.Al año siguiente parte para París, donde permanecerá (con algunos viajes a la Unión Soviética, España y otros países europeos) hasta el fin de sus días. Los años parisinos fueron de extrema pobreza y de intenso sufrimiento físico y moral. Participa con amigos como Huidobro, Gerardo Diego, Juan Larrea y Juan Gris en actividades de sesgo vanguardista, pero pronto abjura de su propio Trilce y hacia 1927 aparece firmemente comprometido con el marxismo y su activismo intelectual y político.Escribe artículos para periódicos y revistas, piezas teatrales, relatos y ensayos de intención propagandística, como Rusia en 1931. Reflexiones al pie del Kremlin (1931). Inscrito en el Partido Comunista de España (1931) y nombrado corresponsal, sigue de cerca las acciones de la Guerra Civil y escribe su poema más político: España, aparta de mí este cáliz.Toda la obra poética escrita en París aparecería póstumamente en esa ciudad con el título Poemas humanos (1939). En esta producción es visible su esfuerzo por incorporar elementos históricos y de la realidad concreta (peruana, europea, universal) con los que pretende manifestar una apasionada fe en la lucha de los hombres por la justicia y la solidaridad social.
