Este poema filosófico en prosa narrativa constituye una reflexión original sobre la erótica de la arquitectura. La obra recibió una entusiasta recepción crítica a raíz de su primera edición inglesa en 1992 y ha sido actualizada para esta edición por el autor. Pérez-Gómez recuenta la historia de amor del famoso tratado en forma de novela del Renacimiento Italiano Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (1499) desde una perspectiva contemporánea. La obra original, que ha sido libro de culto de arquitectos, filósofos, alquimistas, escritores y artistas durante muchos siglos, revela el espacio erótico en las labores de Polyfilo en busca de su amada, un peregrinaje pasando de un bosque oscuro a un jardín salpicado de ruinas y monumentos, canales, fuentes y juegos hidráulicos que a través de sus ambientes y experiencias dan sentido a la vida. En la nueva versión, el bosque ha sido reemplazado por el espacio de la alta tecnología de artefactos, aviones y aeropuertos, y los ejemplos arquitectónicos incluyen múltiples importantes edificios contemporáneos al igual que espacios conjurados en otros medios artísticos, desde la pintura y la escultura a la cinematografía y la literatura. Ambas versiones existen en los limites entre la ficción y la teoría.
About the Author: Alberto Pérez-Gómez nació en la Ciudad de México en 1949, donde estudió arquitectura, empezó su carrera académica y ejerció brevemente la profesión. Tras efectuar estudios de postgrado en el Reino Unido, ha sido profesor en Londres y los Estados Unidos. En 1983 fue nombrado Director de la Escuela de Arquitectura de Carleton University, lo que lo llevó a Canadá como residente. Reconocido internacionalmente a raíz de la publicación de su primer libro, el Dr. Pérez-Gómez ha dado conferencias a través del mundo. Es autor de numerosos artículos publicados en prestigiosas revistas profesionales y en colecciones de ensayos. Desde 1988 ha sido el Editor Ejecutivo de la serie de libros intitulada CHORA: Intervals in the Philosophy of Architecture, publicada por McGill-Queen's University Press (séptimo volumen en preparación). En enero de 1987 fue nombrado a la cátedra Saidye Rosner Bronfman en Historia de la Arquitectura en la Universidad de McGill, donde creó y dirige un prestigioso programa en Historia y Teoría de la Arquitectura (Masters y Doctorado). Sus libros incluyen Architecture and the Crisis of Modern Science (MIT Press, 1983, premio Hitchcock en 1984); Polyphilo or The Dark Forest Revisited (MIT Press, 1992), que sirve de base a la presente edición; Architectural Representation and the Perspective Hinge (con Louise Pelletier, MIT Press, 1997); y más recientemente, Built upon Love: Architectural Longing after Ethics and Aesthetics (MIT Press, 2006), publicado por la Universidad Veracruzana bajo el título de Lo Bello y lo Justo en Arquitectura: Convergencias hacia una práctica cimentada en el amor (2014).
