Se ha dicho que escribir la vida de un personaje es emprender el mas apasionante de los itinerarios: es la ruta de un alma. Pedro Claver es una de las figuras mas admirables del siglo XVII, como hombre, como sociologo y como santo. Fue testigo vivo de la tragedia social del continente negro, el reino de la esclavitud; alla volo mil veces su celo de apostol y alla quiso ir en los ultimos anos. Vio llegar a los hijos de Africa a las costas de America, encadenados; y su aspiracion suprema fue hacerlos libres. Debio conocer su historia y su lenguaje, hablaba la lengua angola. Al contacto con esos miles y miles de desgraciados, que procedentes de 40 naciones la esclavitud arrojo a las playas de America, su caracter se volvio cada vez mas melancolico. Asistio como forjador eficaz a la segunda etapa del Nuevo Mundo, a la edad de oro colonial, por representar ese periodo de 50 anos del siglo XVII la continuacion del imperio hispanico continental, en la linea de las riquezas, de los heroismos y aun de la santidad. Fue uno de los gigantes del espiritu que dulcifico y canalizo la rudeza del conquistador. Claver, sin quererlo, represento en su profunda vida interior, la sintesis de tres mundos: fisicos, morales y sicologicos. No llenan su biografia grandes conflictos e intervenciones politicas -el era el esclavo blanco de una raza negra oprimida y su personen) ante los duenos-, sin embargo, en esta canalizacion de cultura, en este esfuerzo por incorporar una raza esclava a una libre, injertandola en una tierra fisica y moralmente nueva, en una lengua y una fe nuevas tambien, consiste su mayor grandeza y el titulo por el cual le podemos llamar con plenitud de significado: el santo que liberto una raza. Pedro Claver sera un santo interior que lleva a la accion la espiritualidad de san Alonso Rodriguez y sera a la vez un mistico que lleva la espiritualidad a la accion social del P. Sandoval. Con estas ideas se aclara toda su vida y se iluminan las posibles paradojas que encontramos en su heroismo. Esta es la clave de su historia sencilla. Por otra parte, como matices menores, descubrimos que hay que modificar conceptos acerca de su caracter. No era tan rudo como quieren algunos hacerlo aparecer. En su vida social no era antisocial con las clases altas, pues una de sus amistades mas profundas fue precisamente con una persona de esta clase. Hay que rectificar sus relaciones con los superiores tambien. No es el santo brusco y rectilineo que vive en su callada y dolorosa mortificacion. Sabe ser amigo, mantiene relaciones con lo mas granado de la sociedad cartagenera, tiene el sentido moderno de la formacion de jefes y aplica un metodo social religioso que le llevara al triunfo. El presente libro es realista. No es una biografia acaramelada. Tiene algo de esta literatura cruda, moderna, que llama a las cosas por su nombre y no se espanta ante las realidades mas violentas. Preferimos los testigos directos a las consideraciones romanticas. Pedro Claver fue un hombre de su tiempo que se entrego totalmente a la caridad, no importa las exigencias que trajera consigo. Ciertos heroismos no deben producir repugnancia, sino al contrario, admiracion profunda. Talvez por eso su mensaje es actual, hoy despues de tres siglos. Mensaje de Claver! Veremos como su accion tiene interferencias con tres continentes: Europa, Africa, America. Para escribir la vida de San Pedro Claver, talvez se necesita sentir profundamente dos mundos, el europeo y el americano. Escribir del joven catalan y su mundo, sin conocerlo, es casi imposible, es el defecto de muchas biografias escritas del lado americano.
