El Rito y la Risa es una colección de ensayos que abordan diferentes manifestaciones burlescas en el seno de la religión cristiana, dentro del contexto hispano. Las fiestas de locos, inocentes, tontos y bobos, las celebraciones mojigangas del Corpus Christi, los turbulentos festejos con ocación de las misas nuevas, los villancicos de escarnio a San José, las picantes canciones de la Candelaria o los diferentes géneros teatrales burlescos de la Navidad, son todos ellos formas ritualizadas, lúdicas y dramatúrgicas que han dado ocasión a una singular mezcla de religiosidad y profanidad, devoción y diversión. Protagonizadas en muchos casos o, al menos, auspiciadas por clérigos, estas costumbres jocosas han despertado durante siglos la indignación de la parte más ortodoxa y conservadora de la Iglesia. El día de fiesta habría que celebrarse con alegría espiritual (spiritualis laetitia) no con alegría temporal, con cánticos devotos y honestos (no profanos), procesiones piadosas (no mascaradas bufas), embriagándose el alma con el vinum spirituale y abominando los deleites carnales.Pero los preceptos de contención y seriedad no siempre surtieron efecto. En algunos casos la Iglesia no tuvo más remedio que consentir ciertos desvaríos jocosos, habida cuenta de que el pueblo interpretaba a su manera las historias evangélicas, y aprovechaba ciertas fechas para plasmar mundana y jocosamente aquello que estaba revestido de sacralidad. La raigambre de ciertas costumbres risibles en determinados momentos festivos del año no derivó, empero, exclusivamente de la pervivencia de prácticas paganizantes, ni de un espíritu festivo profano. La comicidad encontró acomodo también en una teología que supo tomar en consideración el sentido profundo de la risa y la alegría. En ocasiones se justificaron so pretexto de una loca alegría por la celebración de algún misterio principal; en otras, siguiendo la teoría de la eutropelia, según la cual se consideraba razonable cierto desahogo de las obligaciones y el tedio diario. Y aun sirvió la burla festiva y ritual para otros propósitos más específicos: como humillación simbólica de la soberbia del poderoso, a la par que se ensalzaba al loco, al bobo, al simple, al niño, haciendo realidad simbólicamente aquello que pregonaba el Magnificat: "Destronó a los poderosos y exaltó a los humildes" (Deposuit potentes de sede et exaltavit humiles, Lc 1, 51-53).La cultura eclesiástica y la cultura popular no han sido nunca dos realidades separadas, ni contrapuestas, una siempre seria, solemne y sagrada, la otra alegre, vivaracha, profana. Es inexacta, por esencializadora, la imagen de la Iglesia y el Pueblo en irremediable pugna, como si libraran constantemente la batalla de Cuaresma y Carnal. Ciertamente son abundantes los concilios, sínodos y escritos doctrinales de todo tipo que censuran numerosas prácticas festivas y lúdicas como deshonestas, irreverentes, obscenas, obras del diablo o de los impíos, en definitiva. Pero muchos juegos juglarescos, fiestas, representaciones escénicas, danzas, disfraces, cantares, no hubieran sobrevivido sin el apoyo, explícito o implícito, de una parte de la Iglesia (especialmente el bajo clero), que activamente participó en ellos, otorgándoles frecuentemente un sentido teológico, mientras hacía suya ciertos usos arraigados entre las clases humildes, con quienes se mezclaba. Es más, en algunas costumbres -como los sermones burlescos o las representaciones teatrales paródicas- la participación del clero era imprescindible. Y en otras, como las celebradas en honor del misacantano, los clérigos se erigían en protagonistas de la bufonesca algazara.Estos ensayos -eminentemente históricos y antropológicos- demuestran que la comicidad, y más en concreto la burla, ha sido un elemento esencial y constitutivo de un buen número de costumbres festivas con las suficientes dosis de ambigüedad como para que eclesiásticos y laicos pudier
