Protegiendo nuestras costas, como adelantadas contra las amenazas procedentes del centro y oriente mediterráneos, las islas Baleares fueron pobladas ya en el Neolítico. La expedición encabezada por el rey de Aragón, Jaime I el "Conquistador", en 1229, puso fin al dominio musulmán en las islas, si bien quedó una Taifa en Menorca como vasalla del reino de Aragón, hasta su derrota y ocupación definitiva en 1287. Es a partir de entonces que se crea el reino de Mallorca. La numerosa prole habida del segundo matrimonio de Jaime I con Doña Violante de Hungría, lleva al rey a sucesivos proyectos de partimiento de sus estados a fin de dar una parcela de poder territorial a sus varios hijos varones. La muerte de Alfonso, su primogénito, la de Fernando, siendo un niño, y la toma de hábitos del menor, Sancho, permitió que, finalmente el Reino de Aragón se repartiese en solo dos reinos: el de Aragón propiamente dicho, que heredaría Pedro III el "Grande", y abarcaría Aragón, Cataluña y Valencia; y el que se ha dado en llamar "Reino Privativo de Mallorca", que heredaría el siguiente de los hijos varones, Jaime II, que comprendería las islas Baleares (Mallorca, Menorca, todavía bajo el poder de un soberano musulmán aunque tributaria desde 1231, Ibiza y Formentera), así como los territorios continentales del Rosellón y la Cerdaña, el señorío de Montpellier, el vizcondado de Carlades, en Auvernia, y la baronía de Omelades, contigua a Montpellier (en Occitania). Dos aspectos fundamentales condicionarían totalmente la existencia del nuevo reino. Por una parte, el hecho establecido en el testamento de Jaime I mediante el cual el rey de Mallorca sería vasallo del de Aragón; por otra, el que sus territorios no solo no constituían un espacio geográfico continuo, sino que los continentales estaban situados entre Francia y Aragón, dos estados enfrentados y que aspiraban al dominio de, al menos, parte de las tierras asignadas al nuevo reino. Por el tratado de Perpiñán (1279), fruto del desequilibrio de poder entre la corona de Aragón y el Reino de Mallorca, se mantuvo el control político-económico del primero sobre el segundo, restableciendo la unidad jurisdiccional de la corona de Aragón, rota por el testamento de Jaime I. Este hecho condicionaría durante toda la existencia del Reino de Mallorca las relaciones entre ambos. La falta de Cortes agravaría posteriormente la desvertebración de un reino ya de por sí disperso, al carecer éste de una institución común más allá de la monarquía. El Reino de Mallorca tuvo pues una existencia de tan solo 119 años, durante los cuales, además de Jaime I el "Conquistador", su fundador, tan solo tres reyes ejercieron como tales: Jaime II (1276-1311), Sancho I (1311-1324) y Jaime III (1324-1349).

Además, ha sido Jefe de la Sección de Doctrina de la División de Operaciones del Estado Mayor del Ejército (EME) y Subdirector de Doctrina del Mando de Adiestramiento y Doctrina (MADOC). Asiduo conferenciante en diversos foros, es autor de más de un centenar de artículos sobre Táctica, Estrategia y Logística, así como del libro La anexión y guerra de Santo Domingo, Las Guerras de Carlos III, Guerras Olvidadas o Historia Militar de la Reconquista entre otros.
