About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Winner of the Prix Ringuet, the Canada-Japan Literary Prize, and the Gouverneur-Général Award.

"Women live longer than men. Maybe it's better that way. [. . .] Men get easily depressed once their partner dies. They are probably more romantic than women."

Throughout her life, Yukiko kept a terrible secret: on August 9, 1945, before the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, she killed her father. She confesses to the crime in a letter that she leaves to her daughter after she dies; in it, she also reveals that she has a stepbrother.

Soon we discover that Yukiko was not the only who kept unspeakable secrets. Personal stories are skillfully intertwined with historical events: World War II in Japan, conflicts with Korea, and the 1923 earthquake.

New generations continue to come about, as a lucid portrait of a society emerges, a Japanese society full of contradictions and one deeply connected to its traditions. In the background lies nature, a constant and discreet presence, as delicate and elegant as Aki Shimazaki's writing.
