Pero, aun cuando esto se lograra, se plantearía, por último, la pregunta radical de saber por qué se debe ser racional y responsable. Y, según Popper, esta última pregunta puede ser respondida sólo a través de un "act of faith", es decir, de una decisión pre-racional, y justamente, en esta medida, moral.Y a partir de esto, los matemáticos, como Edgar, nos han quitado el derecho a la palabra porque se creen más listos. Cuando es la misma ciencia la que niega el positivismo-cientificista.
La validez de la ciencia y de la ética depende ―así parece ahora― en última instancia de nuestra decisión de voluntad pre-racional.
El epicureísmo es una manera de vivir, algo más cercano a una religión. La Carta a Meneceo es uno de los escritos que es una síntesis de los principios y convicciones de esa manera de vivir. ―¿Epicuro es tu filósofo predilecto? ―Sí, tal vez lo sea. El criterio básico del conocimiento es la sensación, que siempre es verdadera, y el error se origina en el juicio que imagina o se representa ideas que carecen de fundamento real. Así los dioses son sólo imágenes de unos seres felices e inmortales cuya realidad no podemos verificar. Los criterios de verdad son los sentidos, las presunciones y las pasiones, es decir, lo que nos entra por los sentidos, lo que podemos presumir que ocurrirá gracias a la memoria y lo que nos produce dolor o placer.
Congraciarse con la realidad es lo que ha venido a entenderse como la resignación estoica. Ducunt volentem fata, nolentem trahunt ("el destino dirige a quien lo consiente, traiciona a quien lo rechaza"), escribe Séneca. Da lo mismo el esclavo que el señor, lo importante es saberse y sentirse libre. Esclavitud y libertad no se contradicen pues "no hay esclavitud más vergonzosa que la voluntaria", afirma Epicteto.
